About

My teaching approach:

Hello, all! Matt Torrence, the Music Teacher Guy, here. I am a professional private music teacher who has been playing electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, and drums since 1988, and I've been playing piano and keyboard for even longer. I have over 14 years of experience as full-time, private music teacher. My music students have been as old as 4 and as young as seventy-four, and of many different levels of ability. My approach varies due to the uniqueness of each student. There are always several different ways to communicate a concept.

My influences are:

My influences are songwriters and composers who have authored well-written pieces of music. They exist in the realms of classical, jazz, blues, rock, metal, alternative, indie, et cetera.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

Monday through Sunday, morning to evening.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance,Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

Assessing a student's aims and interests is an initial goal of mine, as well as determining his/her current level of ability and musical knowledge. Ability is judged after having the student perform certain exercises, whether they be extremely rudimentary or more sophisticated and involved.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

A lesson with me might entail standard notation reading, rhythm reading, use of tablature, discussion of music theory concepts, analysis of songs/compositions, examination of playing technique, and performance. Chord and scale vocabulary are relevant, and fretboard mastery is important, too.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

I like an "aggressive" student, i.e. one who's serious about being prepared for the lesson by having reviewed the material, memorized the necessary concepts and played his/her instrument during the time between lessons.
