Seamus O. Hames (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, BFA 2002, RISD Summer Program, 1997) is an artist and mentor who has worked with artists to develop their practices for over a decade. The former Director of Arts at Top Drawer Art Center, he is currently the Education Director at the Jamestown Arts Center in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

I believe deeply in the healing powers of art-making, and that anyone and everyone can become an artist. With Drawing being the most basic form of art, I've made it my mission to spread the gospel of Drawing and to help others reap its benefits.

Frequently asked questions

I specialize in working with people with no drawing experience, and each new student begins by learning the basics of observation as well as being open to their own idiosyncratic styles. The goal is to coach artists to develop their daily practice and reap the various therapeutic benefits of art-making.

I graduated from the RISD Summer Program for high school students in 1997 and from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts in 2002. I was the Director of Arts for Top Drawer Art at the Brass, an art program for adults with developmental disabilities, from 2005-2016, and I now work as the Education Director at the Jamestown Arts Center. I have explored drawing in many forms in my career, and have kept a daily practice of simple sketching from life with ink pen since 2008.

My lessons are $50/hour.

I began teaching as an artist mentor for adults with developmental disabilities, developing and teaching skills related to many art mediums including painting, poetry, sculpture, comics, film and textile art. These experiences have informed my approach to teaching over time, where I try to stress the importance of art-making in your daily life and how each person can develop their own artistic personalities. I specialize in beginners with no experience, and I also teach intermediate and advanced drawing techniques to those who wish to advance their technical skills.
