Colby L. says, "I really enjoyed working with here, I did not want the project we were working on to end. I respected her vision and how she went above and beyond to bring that vision to life. Her writing is excellent, and her coaching is exceptional. I have not been in acting in years and was so nervous about getting back into acting. She made the process easy and always gracefully reminded me that I could do this. " Read more

Kate S. says, "When I first came to Dr. Stingley, I was in my last semester at NYU Tisch School of the Arts studying Musical Theatre. And though my acting training there was outstanding, my vocal confidence was at an all-time low. I told Dr. Stingley this, and he made our lessons a very safe space. From there, both my voice and my confidence grew. I had been stuck in the habit of controlling my voice from "chest voice" to "head voice;" and after the first 2-3 months of lessons, I FINALLY understood and felt what an actual "mix" is. I have since been working with Dr. Stingley for about 10 months, both in-person and over zoom. I have taken voice lessons with various teachers over the past 6 years, but *none* have been able to take my voice to the level that Dr. Stingley has, especially in this amount of time. And not only that, but he has inspired me to do better work on my own time. He has a wealth of knowledge that he simply wants to share with you, and he truly has your very best interests at heart." Your Acting Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do acting classes cost?

Acting classes cost $25 to $65 per hour on average for group classes or $50 to $150+ per hour to hire a private acting coach. Prices vary depending on where you live and the instructor's experience and reputation. Acting studios that offer ongoing weekly classes typically charge $150 to $350 per month.

Acting courses and workshops can cost as little as $200 to as much as $2,800+, depending on the content, number of sessions, and the instructor's demand. Some acting workshops are short, 1- or 2-day intensive classes focusing on one aspect of the industry, while other programs last 4 to 8 weeks and cover several topics, methods, and techniques.

Most studios offer a free trial class so you can get a feel for the teaching style and decide if it's right for you.

Are online acting classes worth it?

Online acting classes are worth it if you want to pursue acting and are unable to attend acting classes in person. With online video calling platforms like Zoom and Skype, you can now study acting with the best in the industry from the comfort of your own home! Many reputable acting coaches—including those right here on Lessons—now offer online acting classes and teach the same methods and techniques that they teach in the studio.

Do you need acting classes to become an actor?

You technically don't need acting classes to become an actor. However, acting classes can help you gain confidence, learn new methods and techniques, analyze scenes and scripts, and build new industry connections and relationships. Acting classes can also teach you about the business side of acting, which is as important as acting itself.

How long do acting classes take?

Acting class length varies depending on the studio and the type of class. Some studios have 2-hour classes, while others have classes lasting 3 to 5 hours. Depending on the location, acting classes may be offered in several formats, such as ongoing weekly classes, weekend intensive workshops, and training programs that can run anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks.

What skills do you need to be an actor?

While the necessary skillset varies depending on the type of acting you pursue (think Broadway theater vs. TV commercials vs. film), all actors need a broad range of skills to portray the expressions and emotions of a character so effectively that they temporarily transport the audience to a world where the actor is indeed that character. This often involves:

  • Memorizing lines and stage cues
  • Analyzing scripts and scenes
  • Developing a character's emotions and physical expressions
  • Working with other actors, directors, and production crews
  • Adapting to unexpected changes and situations
  • Speaking clearly and adjusting one's voice to align with the character
  • Learning and developing different acting methods and techniques
  • Being comfortable in front of an audience or camera

Lar is the BEST in the biz! She brings out so many sides of me - some I didn’t even know I had! She pushes me, is very creative, specific, imaginative & fun! Whenever we’re working on sides & the story is vague, we scheme up different ways the story could go - she’s awesome! Highly, highly, highly recommend! - ETHAN POGUE

Mrs. Chambers is one of the reasons i’m confident I’ll never ruin my voice in the future. By my first lesson she was already teaching full body singing, and how to make my body sing along with my voice and not just have it be my voice. Amazing!

Mark is an incredible educator and I am so glad I was able to work with him from high school all throughout my undergraduate years. I would recommend him for any voice type or skill level, as I had a few friends work with him who all had drastic improvements after starting to work with him. Mark’s experience in performance really helps develop not only skill level, but also confidence and stage presence. Thank you Mark!

Mr. Dang was the piano teacher for both my kids and they learnt piano from him for at least 10 years each and they loved it. Although school and other activities did not permit them to continue but Mr. Dang's teaching has had a long lasting effect on them. They still play and it is surprising to see how quickly they learn new musical-pieces/songs. That is where Mr. Dang's teaching comes in - absolutely a brilliant teacher, always encouraging and excellent with kids of all age. Mr. Dang has immense patience, a good listener and a splendid person to talk to. The kids used to look forward to the piano class. Mr. Dang himself is a very accomplished pianist and he has the very talented art of imparting his knowledge to his students. My brief stays during their classes with Mr. Dang encouraged me to become a student of him for a brief period of time, but with no fault of his, I had to quit (fat fingers). The point is Mr. Dang encourages people to learn at their own comfortable pace, there is no pressure and he always finds ways to bring about a positive feeling no matter the student's learning ability. Without any hesitation I will recommend Mr. Dang and if the kids or even I, ever go back to piano it would be to none other than our favorite pianist - Mr. Dang. Mr. Dang thanks for your time, patience, excellent guidance. and also continuous enthusiasm. Kids could not have been where they are today, not just as pianists, but as good human beings, without your positive influence. many thanks and regards (Shree and Abhishu)'s Dad Mr. Mukherjee
