About

My teaching approach:

100% Satisfaction Guarantee. You only pay for lessons you like. You tell me what's important to you, and I will help you achieve your goals. I've been doing this for 31 years, and if the lessons aren't geared to the student's goals, the student won't practice. Life's too short for music lessons that you don't like. Give me a call and let's talk about your goals. I care about what I do, I care about people, and I'll do my best to help you achieve your goals with the guitar.

My influences are:

My musical inspirations range from Bach to Buck Owens, from Clapton to Carcassi, from Isaac Albéniz to ZZ Top... And a whole bunch in between! If you don't see your favorites listed here, it's because there isn't enough room to list everything. I love helping people learn the music that's closest to their hearts. It's one of the best parts of being a music teacher. The most important musical influences in my life have been my students, and of course, my teachers too.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

12 noon to 10 pm. Saturday through Thursday. Closed Friday. By appointment only.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Slide Guitar, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

Typically I'd ask you to play something you like. If you can't play anything, that means you're a beginner, which is fine. We all start somewhere. About half my students are beginners. Next I'd ask what your expectations are from lessons, and if you have specific goals. Some people want to learn to read music, others want to play by ear, etc. There are no wrong answers. The clearer you can be about your goals, the easier it will be for me to help you achieve them.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

Once you've identified some areas to work on, I'll provide material specific to those areas. For example, chords, scales, arpeggios, rhythm, and repertoire. Sight reading and ear training are typically done at the beginning of a lesson, as they make a nice low-impact warm up, but there is no rigid format. Your goals drive the lesson. I'm just the tour guide. The Japanese word for teacher, "Sensei", translates literally to, "One who has come before". If you want to know how to climb a mountain, ask a mountain climber. Others may come before us, but we each still follow our own unique journey,

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

The ideal student wants to learn. Focus and passion are important, but so is a sense of humor. Be able to laugh at your mistakes instead of getting angry at them. We all have good days and bad days, the trick is to enjoy practicing on the bad days as well. Of course, the good days will always be more fun, but once you learn to enjoy practicing, the hardest part is over.
