FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We offer the first lesson for $10 as a 30 minute trial lesson. This allows you the opportunity to meet the teacher, find out what can be accomplished in a 30 minute lesson, and see if the teacher-student relationship is a good fit.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Carla has a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Pedagogy (also from BYU) and is working on a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Dennis has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Music Education and another Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, all from Brigham Young University.

All of our other teachers all have a college degree in music, or they are pursuing a college degree in music, or they have extensive experience teaching and / or performing music professionally.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

We offer our lessons for $55 for a 60 minute lesson, $41.25 for a 45 minute lesson, or $27.50 for a 30 minute lesson.  Discounts are also available for early payment (so, $50 per 60 minute lesson if you pay by the first of the month; ask us for more details).

As an added incentive to give us a try, we'd be happy to offer you a 30 minute trial lesson for just $10 (about ⅓ the regular price, with no-obligation) to see if we can meet or exceed your expectations and make sure the teacher we assign to you is a good fit.

Is this something you'd be willing to consider?  If so, give me a call or text me at 801-787-4172

If you’ll let us know which days of the week work for you, we’ll let you know the times we have available.

How did you get started teaching?

Carla has taught a thriving and highly successful private voice and piano studio in their home for 35+ years.

Dennis was a highly successful band director in the Provo School District for 12 years before becoming a very successful administrator and principal.  He also taught private music lessons for years.

We opened our school in a retail space in August 2017, and we now have more than 275 weekly students, and are assisted by 25 additional teachers on all of the various instruments.

What types of students have you worked with?

We work with students from 15 months old through age 7 in a wonderful program called MusikGarten.  You can learn more about this program and our classes on our MusikGarten website.

We work with older students of all ages in private lessons, so see our website for these services (www.PrattlandMusic.com).

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

We love hearing about our students' successes! We have one student (Abby) who ended the school year in 7th or 8th chair in her band section, and started taking lessons from us in the early weeks of summer. When Abby returned to school in the fall, her teacher held "playing tests" with all of the students performing in a place where she could hear the students, but not see who it was. The teacher was surprised to find out that Abby was placed in 1st chair, because she made so much improvement over the summer months!  Abby, her parents, and we were all very excited and pleased that all of her work and effort was paying off!  Within a few months, the same teacher assigned this student to a more advanced band because Abby was consistently performing so well! Now, as she enters the high school marching band, she has been placed in a coveted spot in their marching placements because she is still doing so well!  We're all very proud of Abby, and her teacher, for the great year filled with improvements that she has had!  Way to go, Abby!!!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Some teachers may charge less than us for private lessons, but our experience is that so often you get what you pay for.  If you really want to work with a top notch professional teacher, you'll come to us and experience the difference.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
