UPDATE: I am teaching the following workshop for Spring 2019: https://wp.me/p5skLl-M6 Please check in on my blog at www.emiliakallock.com/blog for the newest workshop dates and locations!
Painting is an outstanding form of communication, revealing truth and bringing fun, peace and energy to the maker and the viewer.
With over 20 years experience, I teach children and adults and clients commission me regularly for portrait, landscape and mural work.
My art studio is bustling with activity, and I am always pushing my work and myself to higher (more fun!) standards. Subject matter, as well as process, is what comprise art making. Students can expect a unique and avant garde session where theory, intention, technique and practice all play a role in creating the expression you seek.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I teach a specific lesson plan created by myself that mimics the process I utilize in my own studio when creating works of art. The process draws from art history, reasons for making art, why art is valuable, the ways an image comes to life, and lastly, we explore painting and drawing techniques utilized for a successful 2 dimentional portrayal of the idea.
Before starting, we gage together the needs and goals the student has, as well as previous experience. I've seen people with hardly any painting and drawing experience jump right in with no reservations.
In all my classes, our goal is to free up inhibitions and get into a flow state. The wonderful thing about painting is the sky is the limit, and the only expression restrictions you may encounter are the ones you place on yourself. This is a space of no judgement, and I guide you through every step of the process. In some of my past teaching experiences, beginners may feel comfortable in copying material, (the way I and all artists have done) or using pre-established visual guides. Intermediates usually come to the table with a theme they would like to express. In advanced, we work we put to canvas the excitement inside us!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Art History in Spain, Taller de Artes Plásticas, Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain
Apprentice, Studio of master Haida carver Donald Varnell, Ketchikan, Alaska
Sculpture Course, Ivan Cabezón, Valparaiso, Chile
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Students in my class get to work right away, and through my exercises we work towards a producing a piece that you will take home. Please look at my website to get a feel for my style. Art is about expression and communication and each work of art is unique to each human. That is what makes art amazing! When I teach my unique lesson plan ( processes I use in my own studio) my fees are similar to university courses and begin at $160 per lesson, and lessons usually last 2.5-3 hrs. I am also teaching beginning and intermediate classes at local art organizations and at 'sip and paint' establishments. These are more informal and are a fun way to become acquainted with a simple compositions and basic expressions. Please refer back to my profile page here to learn about when and where these classes take place.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching per request of my friends, and the desire to share because of the satisfaction, peace and mindfulness the practice engenders.
