About

My teaching approach:

Regardless of age, musical style, or ability, I believe that making music should be enjoyable. As very few of us go on to become concert performers, there shouldn't be the expectation, or the pressure, that you have to excel to enjoy. Once you enjoy music making you'll find that you will excel! My approach to music education is not rigid like many traditional methods, but rather to encourage students to be creative and help them achieve their own musical goals. Because my lessons are student centered, I don't use or endorse any one teaching method, but instead find what is best suited for the student

My influences are:

Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendryx, Carlos Santana, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons....it's a long list. I've been influenced by just about everyone I've ever heard and admired.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio

My studio on lower South Hill, Spokane.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

In the initial lessons it is very important to begin by creating good playing habits: proper hand position, holding the pick. creating a good tone. It is also important to have an understanding of things like the names of the strings, number of the frets, etc., in order to be able to communicate effectively. The basic concepts of rhythm, harmony, and melody will be discussed.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I will begin the lesson by addressing any specific issues that the students may be having with their playing, and tie those in with other areas of musicianship. My goal is to help create not just guitar players, but well rounded musicians.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal student is one who has a passion for music and who is eager to learn, one who will not just learn what I teach, but use those lessons as springboards for his or her own exploration.
