I am just starting to learn guitar. In the 3 months Ive worked with Bobby Ive made an amazing amount of progress. He is always very helpful, always upbeat, patient and positive. He keeps me motivated to keep challenging myself. His passion for music and playing music is contagious. Bobby teaches *you* how to play, sprinkling theory, reading music, and improvisation into the lesson so its part of learning to play songs. His home studio is comfortable and welcoming--the variety of stringed instruments hanging from the walls gives it a great vibe. Just a great environment to learn. Most rewarding activity Ive undertaking in years.

Bob has taught guitar to my two boys, ages 12 and 10, for the last two years. His enthusiasm and love for music always shines through. It’s always been really important for him to ensure that the boys enjoyed guitar and wanted to play - so it wasn’t just a chore forced on them by their parents. So whenever they came to him with a song they wanted to learn, he always made that a priority, to keep them engaged and interested. It’s obvious that he genuinely cares about them and sincerely celebrates their successes. I would absolutely recommend Bob!!!

Bob is terrific with kids. My daughter started with ukulele and has progressed to guitar. He is responsive to what she wants to learn and she is moving forward in her learning. Bob understands she is balancing her need to practice with other activities and does not make her feel bad when her practice schedule is missed, which I very much appreciate. We have already referred others to him!

A few years back I decided to try my hand at music again, not having played since High School (back in the manual typewriter era). Music is not like a bicycle, you don’t remember how just because you strapped on a guitar in your youth. I was nervous that I was too old to even try to learn. Then I met Bobby Westfall. Bobby is a very skilled and talented player of multiple acoustic instruments in multiple styles, as well as an arranger and composer. But all that does not a teacher make. What Bobby does best is make each lesson an individually personalized experience. And, luckily for someone like me, Bobby is also VERY patient. I originally was seeking to pick up a guitar again, but now, with Bobby’s constant help and encouragement, I am playing a mandolin, a tenor guitar, and still a bit of 6-string. Bobby has a special knack as a teacher for beginners, but he also excels at being a dedicated coach once one develops a few basic skills. More than just helping the student strum a few pieces, Bobby mixes music theory and technique building exercises into his lessons as well. Bobby has also built and repaired a number of acoustic string instruments, giving him insight into what makes the instruments tick. Finally, I must mention that being a student of Bobby is just plain a lot of fun.

Frequently asked questions

I ask people what there long, and short term goals are. From there I evaluate where they are and make suggestions as to what we might work on immediately to get them playing better. Sometimes it comes down the the physical mechanics, what are your fingers and hands doing and how can we train them to work more effectively. Everyone is a little different and I enjoy helping them to understand what it is they need to do and how to do it! I may or may not reccomend a book or two, and give out handouts as well.

I started taking lessons and playing guitar at age 8. I have studied privately with many teachers and was a Music minor in college. I have taught privately, and at music studios, music stores, clinics, and music camps for 35 years. I have also been a Professional performer since the late 70's playing in small groups, bands, and The Houston Symphony's Cambiata Chamber Orchestra playing everything from folk, to bluegrass, jazz, swing, world music, and classical. I have also written 3 books for Hal Leonard Music Publishing.

My rates are as follows:

$35 for a half hour

$50 for 45 minutes

$60 for 1 hour

I do give a good discount for a package of lessons.

I first started teaching private lessons at Sunrise Music Store in Houston, Texas in 1980.

I have taught 5 year old kids to 80 year old students.

Complete beginners, intermediate and have had many professional musicians come to me for help with various things. I have helped students get into UW School of Music, Guitar Institute of Technology, and Berklee School of Music in Boston. I have even had students go on to being professionals themselves.

It's good to have a goal in mind for your lessons.

Where are you now and where would you like to be in         6 months, a year, 2 years?

Be sure you are being realistic about what you are wanting to do and have the time, money, and energy to commit to  doing it. You can take lessons everyday but if you don't practice it will not work. And make sure you have a good working instrument to study on.

Is this something I am committed to doing?

I am serious about this or is it just to pass the time.

When can we get started?
