I was 9-10 yrs old when i experienced civil war. 18 when i start trained in martial arts with a pioneer and former special forces coach. Same time i started deeply my studies in philosophy. One sentence that sticked on me was that of Bruce Lee who said: "Do not fear someon that does 1000 maneuvers, but someone that does one maneuver for 1000 times". Ive started to study and watch patterns from movies in martial arts. To shows to competitions. To real life browl and street fights in the neighborhood. Times when you have to be ruthless. Now im studying and practicing judo and grappling. Also ive seen and studied WWE maneuvers. Wrestling. Capo...

Robin K. says, "I'm excited to be writing about my experiences at Rick Wong's Chinese Martial Arts Center. Classes focus on personal improvement in a welcoming and supportive environment. In my adult class, there is a wide range of ages, fitness, experience, and abilities. Students have included extremely fit people in their 20s up to and including elderly or impaired people in their 80s. Rick's strong understanding of the body encourages good practice and minimizes the chance of injury. As a large-ish middle-aged woman, I find the content of classes are challenging but definitely achievable. Rick creates an environment that fosters learning, is non-competitive and non-toxic. Other students are encouraging and supportive. Rick is a kind and patient teacher who works well with students of all levels. More experienced students will recognize and appreciate Rick's depth of knowledge, while beginners can rest assured that they will be welcomed and treated respectfully. Whether you're a complete novice who is curious about Tai Chi or an experienced practitioner, Rick has a lot to offer. " Read more

What make me most excited about teaching Martial Arts is watching students grow, reach milestones and break barriers. I love to see the confidence that it instills. In my 28 years in the Martial Arts I've seen some amazing transformations, from students on the spectrum, having temper tantrums who became strong confident adults, to kids so shy they cried when asked to use their voices becoming outspoken, to women growing confident enough to start their own business or chase their political dreams. I have a 7th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, which is the style I teach. It is a blended art which includes Kung fu, kempo, karate, Jiu...

Your tai chi chuan questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do Tai Chi classes cost?

Tai Chi classes cost $50 to $100 per month, depending on the school, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional marital arts dojos, and some local parks offer free classes.

Many schools offer individual drop-in classes for $15 to $25 each. A drop-in class provides you with the perfect opportunity to evaluate the school and instructors to make sure they're a good fit for you before signing a membership contract.

Online Tai Chi classes cost $15 to $35 per month for unlimited access. However, you may benefit more by taking some in-person classes first to ensure you're practicing with the correct form.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is a noncompetitive martial arts practice that incorporates continuous flowing movements, controlled breathing, and meditative awareness. Because it is a mind-body exercise, Tai Chi is often referred to as "meditation in motion" and is known for its mental and physical health benefits.

Tai Chi – also called T'ai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Ji Quan – originated in China in the 12th century as a system of exercise and self-defense.

What are the benefits of Tai Chi?

Tai Chi provides a variety of mental and physical benefits, including:

  • Improved balance and mobility
  • Increased flexibility
  • Less pain and stiffness
  • Improved sense of well-being
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased concentration and awareness

Tai Chi has also been proven to lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular fitness, relieve arthritis pain, and prevent falls.

What to wear for Tai Chi?

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to practice Tai Chi. Choose clothes made from breathable fabrics to prevent overheating. Tai Chi involves many slow reaching and turning movements, so clothing that allows you to move freely is ideal.

Wear lightweight, flexible, thin-soled shoes or go barefoot. Avoid sneakers with thick soles or treads that may snag on the floor or restrict ankle flexibility.

Bring a reusable water bottle, especially if practicing outdoors.

How can I find Tai Chi classes near me?

When evaluating Tai Chi schools near you, follow these guidelines:

  • Compare membership packages from multiple schools.
  • Read school and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Visit the school to confirm it's clean and well-maintained.
  • Take advantage of a drop-in class to ensure the school and instructor are a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask Tai Chi instructors?

Ask these questions to ensure you find the best Tai Chi school for you:

  • How long have you been teaching Tai Chi?
  • What membership plans do you offer, and how much do they cost?
  • Do you offer a free or discounted trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Are your classes beginner-friendly?
  • Are your classes more wellness-oriented or martial arts-oriented?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • How long does each class last?
  • What should I wear to class?

Reviews for Boston tai chi classes

Recent success stories from people in the Boston area.
Carole C.
I was curious about tai chi, but wasn’t even sure what it was. I had heard that it was good for flexibility, balance, strength and relaxation. With more than a little nervousness and self-consciousness, I attended one of Rick Wong’s beginner classes. I was immediately welcomed into the group. After some stretching and warming up, Rick had us begin with very simple movements that he both demonstrated and explained. Every week we built on what we had practiced, and within a few months, we had learned a complete form. In addition to being a martial arts master, Rick is a practicing physical therapist who understands how the body moves. Not only is Rick a very knowledgeable teacher, he is very patient and kind. He never puts anyone on the spot, and he provides a lot of helpful information, including very useful explanations of the martial arts origins of various movements. Rick has many long-time students whose loyalty is a testament to his teaching ability, friendly demeanor and good humor. I highly recommend Rick Wong’s tai chi classes!
