Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I'd like to get to know you and your interests and especially what inspired you to make art and where you'd like to go with it. Students can look forward to both practicing their skills and looking inward to find what really inspires them about the world, why they want to make art as well as how. I ask a lot of questions! But it's not a test you have to have the answers for. These are questions to take with you throughout life and your artistic journey, things to keep you thinking creatively, to keep you from getting locked into a pattern or stuck in a rut.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My education is a BFA in Visual Communication and Design with focus in Illustration, and I have interests in spirituality and the occult, fantastic beasts and peoples, the supernatural, and connecting with our natural life force.
The Higher Dark Blog - since 2011
The Higher Dark is an energy and concept in Balance with the Greater Light. Darkness is something I've always had a sense of but didn't see anyone else talking about, so I put what I sensed about it into words and share it with the world. While good and evil do exist, evil appears in both the Light and Dark aspects, so I embrace the Darkness and explore it to sort out and destroy the harmful parts while building on the empowering parts. This blog includes fully original illustrations using symbolism and dark fantasy characters.
The Wild Path of the Indie Shamanka Blog - since 2015
A place for all the crazy concepts I've come to be aware of that basically don't fit into the Higher Dark. This includes talking about Greater Light stuff, magic and energy work, dreams, spirits, and just life, the universe, and everything. I also have a lot of topics about Access Consciousness and Law of Attraction tools.
These blogs are also tied to my YouTube channel and Soundcloud where I produce videos and recordings on the same topics.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My current standard is $20 per hour (US). If you have a request or idea for something else, such as collaborating on YouTube videos for example, feel free to ask.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Really consider how you feel about getting feedback on your work. We can't do the work for you, so everything we do will be facilitating what you choose to do, so that's going to involve a lot of advice, some praise but also some criticism. A good teacher will be kind but firm, attentive to your needs but working to keep you on track for the targets that you choose.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your current targets for your art, and beyond that, where do you think it could be possible to go with it? It's good to look at both what's close at hand for you and what could be out there that you haven't even imagined yet. For current targets, get specific but have several you'd like to shoot for. For long term, keep it open and don't focus on just one or two things, but get a general idea.
