I have a B.A. in Graphic and Web Design with a focus on illustration. I have been painting professionally for 20 years.
I am a freelance graphic and web designer and illustrator located in Mesa AZ. I work in both digital and traditional media. Logos, branding, and websites, and marketing collateral are what I mostely do for my customers.
In the traditional arts, I love portraiture. I strive to be a classical realist when I do a portrait, but work in a more expressionist manner when painting alla prima or still lifes. Primarily working in oils, I sometimes paint in acrylic, watercolor and oil bar or oil pastels depending on the style and tone I want to accomplish with each painting.
Theatre set design is one of my passions. If you are an artist who likes to paint big, theatre scenic painting is the best. The only downfall is that your creation gets painted over for the next play.
Being a creative challenges me. I love pushing myself to be better and moving the bar just a bit higher each time I create something.
Learning to draw or learning to paint is just like learning any new skill. It is not something that is inate and you are automatically good at or not. Skill comes from practice. The more you practice the better you get.
I like teaching the sight size method of drawing. Sight size is a classical realist form of drawing that teaches you to see what is there, rather than what you think you see. Once you learn the concepts you can accurately draw anything.
You need to learn the rules before you can break them.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During our first session, I like to get to know you and what you want to accomplish with learning a new skill. If you have prior work I like for you to bring it so I can assess your current level and ability. We will go over the supply list and materials you will need to be successful.
Then we will start on a painting. Class are anyware 1.5 to 2 hours. If you want to paint longer we can do that too. If you have a painting that you are still working on please bring it to work on if you like.
We will start with learning how to prepare the canvas and progress through painting and the final varnish.
I believe everyone can learn to paint.

I love going to my city's art walk and meeting other artists and talking to them about their work. Doing this increases my knowledge and desire to create.
