About
Valerie loves to teach watercolor painting and works with each student at their level of ability beginning to experienced. Her sense of humor makes classes fun. She is flexible, helping each student with their own individual projects.
She has been teaching watercolor painting since 2004 at art stores and her studio in Phoenix, AZ. Before she was teaching watercolor, she was a designer of printed circuit boards to architectural plans. Teaching drafting and writing drafting courses at trade schools gave Valerie the background for developing a plethora of painting projects that students can follow step by step.
Recently Ms. Toliver retired to Dewey, AZ (near Prescott), where she teaches one class a week at Orchard Ranch Resort. Her paintings are on display and for sale in the Arts and Crafts rooms at North and South Orchard Ranch and at Larson Family Chiropractic.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I demonstrate how to paint a shape. Then I have them paint a few shapes while I help other students. Then I demonstrate how to paint the shape again. I ask the student what they are seeing in my second demonstration that is different than their work. This helps the student understand the technique! After a few paintings of shapes, they can select a project they feel comfortable with and start painting!
