About
Mengyu Liu is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy
under the mentorship of Prof. Hamilton and Prof. Creviston at Arizona State University, where
she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance in 2020.
Mengyu was born in Hunan, China in 1998, began her musical learning journey at the age of 5.
She attended to the attached middle school of Wuhan Conservatory of Music in 2013 and studied
with Lianping Zhu, who’s the professor of the piano department. There she got her annual music
talent scholarship. In 2014, She won the 3rd prize in the 7th Youth Piano Competition in
Shanghai, then won the 1st and 2nd prize in Hongkong International Open Competition in the
category of “Liszt Memorial Award” and “Beethoven Sonata Award”.
Mengyu was honored with numerous scholarships and awards since she studied abroad -
“Special Talent Award-Music Scholarship” and “student carillonneur scholarship”. Besides
competitions, she also participated in masterclasses given by international pianists and teachers,
such as Xiangyu Mao, Weicong Zhang, Stanislav Loudenitch, Arcadi Volodo, Yekwon Sunwoo.
Teaching is not only the way to teach music to different people, but also a "communication" to whom has different musicianship from you, and promote, spread out music

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would like to spend time to test what kinds of learning style they are throughout the first lesson, then teaching them notations carefully with basic music theory. Mostly, I'll guide them on how to play the piano more musically and characteristic after these process finished.

How did you get started teaching?
In 2016, I went to the program back in my home county, to be volunteered to teach at High School, I found those children are smiling out to me while they playing music, and singing, that touched me a lot. Then I decided to take a master's degree in piano pedagogy, learn how to teach more professionally and psychologically.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I participated in the 2nd Pedagogy Day at ASU, which encourages me a lot in teaching and teach equity in students.
I want to be more rounded in musicianship, and a teacher.
