About

Hi! I'm Robert. I'm a performer and cello teacher in the Tucson area.

I have studied the cello for 20 years and had the pleasure of teaching others for 12. Students in my studio range from beginner to advanced-levels and come from a variety of backgrounds. My primary goal is to cultivate a love of music through the study of expressive, ergonomic cello technique to help students reach their personal goals.

When I'm not playing or teaching, you can find me reading a book with my cats, playing D&D, or cooking.

Great instructor with very encouraging lessons, continual forward progress, all while remaining friendly and professional. Works with what you have to learn, such as reference books, etc.

Robert is an excellent teacher. I ought to know, as Im a former professional violinist/violist trying to add some cello ability to my belt, altho its a slow process.
Ive had 7 violin teachers over the years, plus lots of chamber music instruction and festivals with a number of well known teachers, and Robert ranks right up there with the best of them.
Robert is very clear and thoughtful in his planning and getting his points across. He is very respectful, and enjoys a supportive relationship by realistically appreciating my sometimes miniscule progress. He also has fun teaching! – good sense of humor! He demonstrates his ideas very plainly, even in Zoom lessons (although, of course, in-person is always preferable). He provides lots of useful supporting materials and ideas for explorations, as well as being well versed with online resources. Robert is also patient and kind, which goes a long way in a student/teacher relationship.

To a certain extent, by using a video setting, he can see me directly instead of from the side, allowing him to watch me play and provide any addition help I need with hand shape, fingering and bowing.
It was also a lot of fun!

Robert is absolutely phenomenal. He differentiates instruction and our daughter has improved tremendously. We are lucky to know Robert and be able to have him provide lessons!

    Frequently asked questions

My teaching approach is eclectic, drawing from a wide variety of methods and repertoire to fit the individual goals of each student. Students 5 to 95 are welcome in my studio and have made progress reaching their goals, be it studying cello at the college level, auditioning for All-State, or simply playing for fun.

A typical lesson involves scale and technique study, etudes or orchestra class pieces, and selections from the standard (and not so standard!) cello repertoire.
