Joel is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist who is insured through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Joel has a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and has provided soccer skills instruction for children ages 5-16 as well as leading children 3-17 in movement conditioning.
Joel also performs personal training for older adults which he has combined with youth training and medical-grade exercise testing to form the entity Movement Is Learning. Movement Is Learning allows Joel to continue serving older adults, use advanced testing to discover client limitations, and coach youth out of poor movement patterns that cause issues later in adulthood.
Joel enjoys seeing individuals of all ages gain confidence through discovering new abilities. Building confidence tends to be one of the biggest factors in the future success of any athlete and also happens to be an area in which Joel struggled as a youth athlete progressing into the collegiate level.
There's nothing more fun than improving! That's why Joel focuses on creating a plan and environment that helps you get better faster!

How did you get started teaching?
I began coaching GYSO youth soccer for children as young as five when I was in High School (2007-2011). In college (2011-2015), I coached for area summer soccer camps as well as for Mission Athletics (Elkhart, IN) where I led team training for multiple age groups for the club Elkhart County United - this is the same club I played for winning Indiana's Challenge Cup as a 15-year-old.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have provided soccer skills instruction and coaching to youth ages 5-17. For older youth (13-17), I have led soccer conditioning and team strength & conditioning. In addition, I've provided movement instruction to those within special populations (ex. Special Olympics).
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I, myself, use activities that involve similar skill acquisition techniques that I use with my clients. Recently, my two friends and I juggled a swax lax ball to focus on precision before switching back to a regular ball. While feeling the different sensations of the balls is fun, I think it's more fun to experience continued improvement.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask "why" and find out the reasons for using the specific types of training that they use.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much time can I commit to getting better each week?
Why do I want to get better?
In what specific ways would I like to improve?
Where do I envision myself in 5 years?
