About
At this time, I am only offering virtual classes in drawing and/or creative textile and plastic reuse...creating functional art from materials that would otherwise be thrown away.
After the quarantine, I hope to resume studio time as described below...My studio is very pleasant, comfortable and well-stocked with materials and supplies collected over a lifetime of making art and craft. In addition to various painting/drawing materials for observational drawing, plein-air landscape and abstract work, I have beautiful papers, stencils and natural materials for collage and decoration of picture frames, boxes, notebooks or other small functional items. Lately, my concern for living more sustainably has drawn me to create beautiful pieces from recycled textiles and plastics...market bags, hats, pillows... I love individualized teaching to folks of all ages, with the goal helping each student find her/his own creative path. Please check my website for more information and images of my work...www.judithschonebaum.com
There is nothing as wonderful as time in the studio, working with my hands, being creative, listening to a good book-on-tape with a nice cup of tea.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask a new student to bring in any samples of work, ideas or favorite artist images to open the discussion of goals, particular skills wanted to be learned and past art experience. From there, I can suggest various practice assignments to lead to those goals. The important thing is help the student get started, possibly in a few directions, in order to develop a personal process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have always loved teaching from a very early age. I studied art and art education in college, and had the great opportunity to create an individualized course through a grant for a program called "Self-Selection" at a progressive public elementary school in Vermont. Since then, I have also taught in Maryland and California, both in schools, for afterschool programs, higher education programs, facilitated drawing workshops in Mexico and through Elderhostel (now called Road Scholar). And now, with the quarantine, I'm becoming more comfortable with virtual teaching, which has the benefit of enabling the student to develop in her/his own environment.
