About
My classes are held in my personal art studio and the structure is something that I discover organicallly with the student. The goal is to meet them where they are when they come to work with me. And from there, to figure out where and how they want to grow as an an artist and as an individual.
I believe that making art is deeply personal and often deeply felt in the individual who is making it and viewing it. Stories are often shared during my lessons and more often than not, breakthroughs are made within the painting and within the personal life of the student. Personal and artistic growth seem to go hand in hand when working with me in my studio and in the classroom.
Another aspect that sets this experience apart is that because the lessons can take place in my studio I am often painting while you are painting. This sets a tone of focus and intention and the student has the chance to learn directly from a painter of over 18 years.
One of the things that I love the most about teaching is seeing a student get excited about their own achievements. I know how challenging it can be to get to that place as an artist and being able to help someone achieve that feeling is incredibly rewarding.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to spend the first session finding out what their initial goals are in taking art lessons. Depending on what those goals are I will most likely have them do a basic drawing or painting excercies that involves a still life that I provide. This allows me to witness first hand the level of skill they are already at. This also gives me insight on the students personal style and how I can imporve on but technique and style.
If they are an absolute beginner then I start the lesson off by demonstrating very basic techniques and allowing the student to try them out for themselves with very little structure. This excercise is more about play and self expression. After this excercise complete I have the student apply the new techniques to an actual image. This will most likely be a landscape view from the studio window or a still life that is set up in the studio.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors in Fine Arts with a focus on painting and drawing from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
I’ve been paintings and drawing for over twenty years.

How did you get started teaching?
I first started by running art groups seven years ago with a non profit called Painted Brain. I ran these groups at transitional housing units for at-risk young adults who were formally incarcerated and formally homeless. From there I began teaching at a charter school for at-risk young adults where I created, developed and implemented the visual, film and performing arts program. I did this for five years and absolutely loved it. I am still running art groups for Painted Brain and teaching private art lessons in my painting studio.
What types of students have you worked with?
Most of my experience is with young adults (age 16-25). I'm looking forward to gaining experience with a broader demographic.
