About
When I teach a private student I need to understand their personal goals and experience in learning to paint. It is important to learn the fundamentals of painting and build on those principles. Composition and Design, Values, Color Harmony, and sound drawing are some of these elements. it is important to note that these principles apply to every subject and all mediums.
I believe that my service stands out because I have a desire for each student to build confidence and succeed as they develop their "skill set" in painting. It is fulfilling to me as a mentor to see the development and individual expression unfold as knowledge is absorbed.
I love sharing my passion for painting with others. Observing and interacting with someone gives me insight in how they best absorb information. Demonstrations are very important in teaching the visual arts, but it is also important to explain the why's and wherefors of methods and techniques. I have had the benefit of academic education and also the advantage of having studied with some very accomplished successful master painters. Art history especially about the impressionist painters is meaningful and I enjoy sharing some stories when that is relevant. Learning to paint requires tenacity, intelligence and passion but it also needs to be fun and enjoyable. I value the relationships I cultivate with students who often become friends over time. I have been teaching from my studio in Laguna Canyon for over twenty years and have a degree in fine art.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The initial meeting is preferably at my studio if possible. It affords the student an opportunity to view my paintings and is a comfortable setting to get acquainted. For the first lesson it is also helpful as I have supplies and resources available as needed. After that if the student prefers meeting in their home or on location to paint outdoors we can arrange those lessons by appointment. I ask that the student keep a notebook for reference with goals so we can structure projects and work toward those goals in a timely and meaningful way.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in fine art/interior design from Fullerton College. I also studied at Putney School of Art in England and UCLA. I worked in the Interior Design field for many years during which time I commissioned fine art for projects ranging from high end residential, model homes, corporate offices and hotels. I enjoyed interior design but always wanted to pursue my dream of being a fine artist. So after a successful career in that field I began to paint and study with some execeptional painters. After I was accepted into the prestigious Festival of the Arts I decided to open my own studio and follow my dream.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I do place a value on my time. So simply stated, if a student is willing to come to my studio for lessons I am able to provide my time at a more affordable fee. I am willing to travel within a reasonable distance if the lessons are to take place in a residence. The introductory lesson as well as subsequent lessons needs to be three hours. It necessitates set up time and clean up time and time for questions and clarification if needed. To paint (especially in oil) requires this time. The other factor which affects the fee is frenquency. If the lessons are monthly, bi-monthly or weekly. Weekly lessons are less than bi-monthly or monthly. Also to be considered is the student's intent and ability to invest both time and money to progress at a pace that is comfortable and works with their lifestyle and schedule. For all these considerations we will create a schedule that is most beneficial. For the initial meeting/consultation the fee is $150.00 for an hour to an hour and a half. This meeting allows us to get acquainted and discuss goals. I would ask to see examples of previous works if photos are available. A supply list and handouts are provided.
