About

As a teacher, I bring a fundamentals-driven approach to my lessons. Using the building blocks of the subject at hand to bring the student's intentions and goals to fruition is my ultimate goal.

After more than a decade working as a professional musician in high profile situations, I also bring real-world experience to the table. As a graduate of Berklee College of Music ('10), I've had the opportunity to learn from the greats not only how to play, but how to teach.

Joey was able to come over and assist me with pieces that I struggled with. If he was unavailable for in person lessons, he took the time to still respond to texts and FaceTimes.

Joey’s lessons are very student-friendly. He always asks what I want to do at the beginning of every lesson and he ensures that we go over each step of the lesson thoroughly. Joey makes sure to prioritize quality over quantity ensuring that the student gets the exercise/lesson down before moving on to the next. Joey is also very patient during the lessons making it easier to complete difficult exercises.

    Frequently asked questions

In the first lesson I try to build rapport and get a sense of what the student is hoping to get out of music lessons. From there, I'll personalize the approach for each individual student, always with focus on providing the tools to improve the fundamental skills of music.

In addition to my professional experience, I am a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the Global Jazz Institute. I have also been fortunate to study under a number of world-class musicians and teachers.

Pricing depends on length and location, but typical pricing for an hour would be $75 at client's home, $50 for online.

I started teaching when I was still in high school in the Los Angeles area. In college I was given the opportunity to give group clinics at the Panama Jazz Festival and at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. After college, I moved to NYC where I taught both privately and out of Joe's Music and Dance Academy, an institution in Brooklyn and Queens. Since moving back to LA, I have continued to teach both privately and for various organizations/outreach programs.

I have taught all ages and experience levels, in addition to group clinics ranging from children to the college level.

I believe it's important to pick a teacher with practical and professional experience in the subject they teach. Look for someone who will push you and encourage you to be the best musician you can be.

Knowing what the student in interested in achieving can be helpful. As a teacher, I always want to be able to keep the student engaged and interested. But if you're not sure what the larger goal is, no problem! A good teacher can help provide that direction.
