About this pro

Ion Photography began when I started studying photographic technology at St. Petersburg College in Clearwater, Florida. After earning my A.A. and doing basic portraits and event photography, I moved to Boulder, Colorado to attend art school at the University of Colorado, and further honed my skills in portraiture, event photography, studio lighting, video production, photo restoration, editing and digital art and design. In 2018 I earned my Masters in Business Administration primarily to bridge the gap between art and business. My students will not only benefit from learning the technical and art processes, but how to monetize those skills in a business setting.

Since picking up my first camera while stationed in Istanbul, Turkey in 1977, I was hooked. I eventually studied Photographic Technology at St. Petersburg College in Florida and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Studio Arts with a minor in Technology, Arts, and Media at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. I started my business in 2010 while still in junior college and have been developing my craft since then. After finishing an MBA at Florida Atlantic University I am always developing my business wherever life takes me. Photography is simply one of those lifelong passions! What a challenge it is to capture that perfect image.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Assess the level of knowledge by reviewing the basics. Depending on the assessment I will then work with the students' strengths and weaknesses and go out in the field for some real world situations and hands on experience.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Studio Arts with Photography and Video emphasis and a minor in Technology, Arts and Media from the University of Colorado. I have been actively working in the field since 2010. My photography experience includes weddings, events, portraits, headshots, architecture, aerial video, lifestyle shoots, sports, long exposure, light painting, landscape, panorama, stop motion, time-lapse, a bat mitzvah and a theater group to name a few.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Standard pricing is typically $100 - 250 per hour depending on the job and the client but I try to work with all clients and their budgets when possible.

How did you get started teaching?

I started a student photography group while attending the University of Colorado to bridge the gap between art and business.

What types of students have you worked with?

I love to talk about photography. That said, there isn't anyone of any age that I wouldn't want to work with if they have an interest in my passion!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I photographed a July 4th celebration in Rosarito, Baja Mexico and had a wonderful time working with all of the attendees.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

A teacher must have a firm grasp of the basics. Everything in photography builds off the "basics". Remember that photography is the art of capturing light...LIGHT is always your "subject".

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What are you trying to accomplish? Is it art or commercial applications? What level do you want to take it to...you can dig as deep as you have the energy and passion for.
