Kim G. says, "Alfredo is one of the most prodigious and skilled artists I have ever met. He makes his personal skills easy to understand and communicate and the way I have grown as an artist in the past 3 years with him is beyond anything I ever expected of myself, let alone something I ever expected an artist to be able to communicate to another person as a teachable skill. If you’re on the fence about hiring him, please do yourself a favor and do it!" Read more

Having been captivated by art from a young age, I find my primary inspiration in the human form. My artistic journey began while studying for my degree at Community College, and soon discovered my true passion is in Fine Art. I refined my drawing and painting skills through life drawing workshops across Los Angeles and recently earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. Since 2019, I've showcased my work at Barclays Cafe in North Hills, California, and in January 2024, my paintings were featured in prestigious exhibitions across New York and California. I’m excited to help you explore the techniques of th

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

What questions should I ask painting instructors?

When looking for local painting classes, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

He is able to break almost every complex art related task down into reachable step-by-step exercises. It may seem formulaic at first, but that approach worked to quickly facilitate for me a solid understanding of perspective, figure drawing, portrait painting, and even sculpture. His critiques can seem brutally honest, but that’s an asset which also helped stimulate some rapid artistic growth for me.

I could leave a novel length review regarding how good my experience was with my first round of sessions were with Alfredo. I had absolutely no experience painting with oils prior to my classes. As our sessions went on, Alfredo created snd altered my class structure to accommodate what I needed. He didn't just teach me how to put oils on a canvas, but explained the importance of everything from the care and cleaning of your brushes, materials he recommended all the way to explaining color theory, sketching and more. He has played an integral role in me using art and painting to finding peace and putting smiles on my face. I cant wait to see my progress in our next round of sessions. Not only is Alfredo a great instructor, but hes my mentor and my friend. Hes helped a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran find a way to push an illness aside and use art to be happy. I hope I'm able to attach my paintings below. One is my very first completed painting and one about to be completed, and could not look anything like they do with Alfredo's guidance. They are pieces painted prior from other artists.

It was a joy to watch him paint. His painting style is beautiful. While painting, he explained the process: the composition, the values, the colours and their temperature. I wanted to loosen my style, so we focused on brush strokes. He can do magic with brush strokes! He also talked about the importance of edges and transitions between light and shadow. He gave me recommendations, told me what works and what doesn’t and shared his vast knowledge about art and what it takes to be an artist. I have learnt a lot and much enjoyed working with him.
