Math You Wong Tutoring
About
Hi, I'm Matt Wong, a UC Berkeley student studying Applied Mathematics and Data Science. I've loved math since I was a kid, and that's a big part of why I tutor now.
Growing up, I competed in MathCounts throughout middle school and advanced to Sectionals at Stanford. I also earned AMC 8 Honor Roll, spent two years in Berkeley Math Circle, and trained through Art of Problem Solving. Those years of competition math taught me how to break hard problems into pieces, something I still use with every student I tutor.
For the past several years I've tutored students from elementary school through high school, one on one through my own initiative, Math You Wong, and as a peer tutor at Lowell High School. I've worked with kids catching up to grade level and kids prepping for a specific test or grade. My favorite part is watching a student go from "I don't get this" to solving the next problem completely on their own.
When a student gets stuck, I don't jump straight to giving the answer, I ask them to walk me through what they've tried so far. That's usually where I find the real problem, maybe a step got skipped earlier, or a definition never quite clicked. Once I know what's actually going on, we work on that specific thing instead of grinding through more practice problems. I'd rather a student understand why something works than memorize the steps to get through a test.
I tutor everything from basic arithmetic and fractions up through algebra, geometry, and competition math prep. I teach in person around Daly City, San Francisco, and the Peninsula, and online over Zoom.
