Kim G. says, "Alfredo is one of the most prodigious and skilled artists I have ever met. He makes his personal skills easy to understand and communicate and the way I have grown as an artist in the past 3 years with him is beyond anything I ever expected of myself, let alone something I ever expected an artist to be able to communicate to another person as a teachable skill. If you’re on the fence about hiring him, please do yourself a favor and do it!" Read more

Sonah M. says, "What Andres a great teacher is that he listens to his students carefully. He is excellent at teaching values, colors, temperature, edges, and drawing. He teaches how to compose pictures and sets up still life arrangements with great detail. His explanations are easy to understand, and he snakes even complex concepts simple and does so quite effectively. He responds to questions promptly, always keeps his promises, and engages with his students rather than teaching in a one-way manner. He is very patient and demonstrates painting and drawing techniques, offering a wide variety of methods. I highly recommend him at any level. He can meet you at your level and make you grow." Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

When looking for local painting classes, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

I could leave a novel length review regarding how good my experience was with my first round of sessions were with Alfredo. I had absolutely no experience painting with oils prior to my classes. As our sessions went on, Alfredo created snd altered my class structure to accommodate what I needed. He didn't just teach me how to put oils on a canvas, but explained the importance of everything from the care and cleaning of your brushes, materials he recommended all the way to explaining color theory, sketching and more. He has played an integral role in me using art and painting to finding peace and putting smiles on my face. I cant wait to see my progress in our next round of sessions. Not only is Alfredo a great instructor, but hes my mentor and my friend. Hes helped a U.S. Marine Combat Veteran find a way to push an illness aside and use art to be happy. I hope I'm able to attach my paintings below. One is my very first completed painting and one about to be completed, and could not look anything like they do with Alfredo's guidance. They are pieces painted prior from other artists.

Shellise is a patient, and thorough teacher. She explained color combining, how to use different colors to get the desired effect. I have no prior experience painting, yet with her instruction, I was able to paint pictures I’m proud to display in my living room.

I have studied Chinese brush painting with Henry Li (of Blue Heron Arts) on-line for several years and can say without hesitation that he is a simply amazing teacher and artist. I have loved studying with him. His teaching is clear, thorough, accessible and well-presented as well as being creative and inspiring. He has both a depth and breadth of knowledge, not only in Chinese brush painting but also in related areas and fields, which he very generously shares. As a student I appreciate how he seamlessly weaves together aesthetics, specific principles, helpful attitudes to cultivate, and thoughts on the creative process along with detailed discussions and demonstrations of a wide variety of specific techniques, methods, materials and various painting styles. At the same time, he creates superb paintings, and inspires and encourages each student. He has an in-depth knowledge of specific materials and ways they can be used. He is able to explain both general and detailed points about painting along with suggestions as to what might work best for what I want to achieve. While being highly skilled in traditional tools and methods, he employs a variety of other creative and non-traditional materials and techniques, depending on what any given student is interested in exploring. Depending on one’s interests, he offers examples of paintings by various master artists, including those he has studied with himself and discusses how they were done. I have seen him work with many other students as well, and he is very adept at reaching students at all levels from complete beginners to professional artist. He is able to easily tune into a student’s interests and strengths. He is sensitive and encouraging, while also being able to give helpful critiques. He responds very well to questions and comments and individual needs a student has. And he has a wonderful sense of humor! I have always been touched by his kind heart which shines through everything he does. I have a background in both art and education (my professional works has been in the field of adult learning and experiential education). I have seen over the years that often someone can be an excellent artist but not a very good teacher, and vice versa. Henry Li is outstanding in both areas. In addition, his love of art, and enthusiasm for learning and exploration shines through his teaching, and he inspires that same passion and creativity in his students. I feel privileged to be able to learn from him.
