About

Teaching: painting in oil, watercolor, gouache; drawing: pencil, graphite, charcoal. Beginners and intermediate levels.

I really want my students to get information and guidance that will not only make their work better but that my students understand the why and how of it and add this knowledge to their tool box. And then, build on this knowledge.

I love seeing my students “get it” and then apply it to their work; the lightbulb coming on is a thrill, and I will keep re-explaining in different ways until that lightbulb shines.

I have been teaching most of my life: first as a ski instructor, a scuba diving assistant, accounting and taxation to my fellow professionals while I was a practicing CPA. I returned to my first love, art, in 1990 when my CPA career got devasted by constant migraines. Teaching art is extremely satisfying because what teachers have done for me, I love to do for others: help them grow in knowledge, skills and execution and most of all in the satisfaction and joy of painting.

    Frequently asked questions

First, I like to see some of the student’s recent works, then I like to discuss the student’s goals and expectations. Lastly, I explain my teaching methodology which is project-based that incorporates the fundamentals including but not limited to the Principles and Elements of Design, understanding color, composition and much more.

As indicated above, I have significant hands-on teaching experience in various fields. More importantly, my students say I explain things well.  And I am persistent: I will present a concept in various ways until it is understood.

Over the last 35 years I have hunted down “fundamentals” of art and of painting. In highschool I took  studio art. This was the mid-1960s and expressionism ruled the art curriculum. In the 1980s I started searching for basic information about art. I took workshops from many world-renowned artists, and I am still mentored by master painter Regina Lyubovnaya who trained under David Leffel.

I have recently moved back to Southern California!

    My rates:

    1 hour:     $45

    1.5 hours: $60

    2 Hours:  $75 and 3 Hours at $100

Soon after I started showing my work in 1985, I had requests for private lessons and have been teaching, and learning, and teaching!
I enjoy working with various types of students. Each student brings a new perspective, a different level of creativity and vision. Also each student has a different kind of interest in the work they want to do. In the process we always have interesting discussions that lead to insights on art and its process.
Recently I had a solo show in York S.C. focusing on my work on forests and trees. I enjoyed seeing how many people have a fondness for forests, for nature. For me, my work brought back memories of my father who taught me how to respect forests and love the trees.
Will you teach me the fundamentals for what I want to achieve? Will you hear and recognize my goals in art?
Here is where I am at with my art. Can you help me, teach me, coach me in getting to the next level?
