About

I have over 18 years of teaching and coaching experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) levels. My achievements include back-to-back league championships at the college and high school levels, C.I.F. Regional and Section appearances, and helping players move onto college and professional levels. I have coached, mentored and developed multiple All-American players, high school league M.V.P.s, and All-League 1st team players. My strengths include basketball subject matter knowledge, understanding basketball methods, practice design, team strategy, skill development, and team building. I focus on emphasizing life skills, developing meaningful coach-athlete relationships, and motivating student-athletes to achieve individual and team goals. The focus of my service is to help players of all levels meet their individual, specific, or team needs with my years of college and high school training experience.

I enjoy working with all players and helping them achieve their goals and maximizing their potential.

We signed my 15-year-old son up for 10 private training sessions with Coach Calvin, and it was one of the best decisions we’ve made for his basketball development. From the very beginning, Coach Calvin was professional, responsive, and took the time to explain his training program in detail. He answered every question I had, communicated clearly about scheduling and locations, and made the entire process easy and stress free.
What stood out most was the way he coached. He held my son to a high standard while staying patient and encouraging, creating an environment where he could learn, grow, and build confidence. Coach Calvin has a deep understanding of the game, and every session was focused, challenging, and purposeful. My son has improved not only his skills but also his basketball knowledge.
The biggest difference with Coach Calvin is that he genuinely invests in the kids he trains. You can tell his priority is helping each player reach their potential, not just filling a schedule. He is honest, motivating, and truly wants to see his athletes succeed both on and off the court.
If you’re looking for a trainer who is knowledgeable, committed, and genuinely cares about your child’s growth, I highly recommend Coach Calvin. We had a great experience, and I wouldn’t hesitate to train with him again.

We’ve had an excellent experience working with Coach Calvin. His professionalism really stands out—each session is clearly guided by a thoughtful lesson plan, and it’s obvious he puts intention into every practice. He provided consistent, constructive feedback that helped our son understand not just what to improve, but how to improve it.
One of the most valuable aspects of his coaching was the use of video reviews. Being able to see technique broken down visually has made a huge difference in our son’s understanding and confidence. Coach Calvin takes the time to review footage carefully and explain adjustments in a way that is clear, encouraging, and age-appropriate without being condescending.
Most importantly, we’ve seen real, measurable improvement in our son’s skills since working with him—better mechanics, stronger fundamentals, and increased confidence overall. Coach Calvin strikes a great balance between structure and encouragement, and we feel very fortunate to have him as a coach. Highly recommend to any family looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, and professional coach!

Great experience. I loved how the coach really took the time to explain his concepts. I loved how the practice wasn’t all just code drills, they were drills that really help the player transition his skill set into the game.

Frequently asked questions

First, the student can tell me specifically what areas they need support in. The other option is for me to conduct an assessment to see their current skill level. For example, basic ballhandling, footwork, and shooting drills would be planned followed with more advanced moves if needed. The most important component is knowing what the student needs so I can support and target the areas with a plan, specific design, and execution.

Generally, we start at $50 per hour. From there we can start to develop a pricing package depending on the level of consistency and seriousness of the student.

I started as a middle school teacher and eventually went to California Baptist University to get my Education Specialist Teaching Credential in Mild to Moderate Disabilities. My high school coach was a big influence on my decision to pursue teaching and coaching. He provided guidance in a time where I was lost and really shaped my life through the lessons he taught me through the game of basketball.

College, High School, Youth. I have work with all ages in my coaching career.

First, look at their resume or credentials. Teachers with experience have a lot to offer because they have committed to learning the craft of teaching and coaching. Secondly, try to speak with the person over the phone first to see if it is a "good fit." Next, trust your instincts if the teacher is right for you. If you get a chance to work with the teacher, you should know if they have qualities that will benefit you in the short and long term.

Students should first be specific. The more specific the more targeted instruction can be. Since time is limited, the student should seek to get exactly what they need to improve. If they don't know, the teacher might need to assess and provide an evaluation. From there, the teacher can identify priority areas to work on. Basketball is a game that requires time and work to develop the fundamental skills necessary to be competitive and successful when playing. Improving is a journey and the quicker the student begins the better chance they have of improving.
