As a freelance saxophonist and woodwind artist, Los Angeles native Dan Kaneyuki has been active on the LA scene for 15 years. Dan is currently one of the most in-demand young saxophonists in southern California. From 2012-2015, he toured internationally with legendary recording artist Engelbert Humperdinck, and has been touring with The Brian Setzer Orchestra since 2017.
Dan’s improvisational talents have led him to play at jazz festivals all over the world, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Bali Live International Jazz festival, and the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta. Dan can be heard on several TV shows such as BoJack Horseman, Jane the Virgin, Hollywood, and Family Guy, and has made appearances on Good Day L.A., The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Home and Family, and the Dante Night Show. He can be seen in the 2017 Lincoln car commercial featuring Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and will appear on Disney'sBig Shot next year alongside John Stamos.
Dan's live performance credits include Stevie Wonder, David Foster, Diane Schuur, Bobby Caldwell, Gregory Porter, Jason Alexander, Poncho Sanchez, The Manhattan Transfer, Frank Stallone, Matthew Morrison, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Barbara Morrison, The New York Voices, Nile Rodgers, Steve Tyrell, Haley Reinhart, Melissa Morgan, Roy McCurdy, Gerald Wilson, Renee Olstead, Laura Fygi, Peter Erskine, Earl Klugh, Bastille, 10,000 Maniacs, Stone Sour, and countless others. Dan received a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach in 2010, and his compositional talents have garnered him two “ASCAP Young Jazz Composer” awards in 2012 and 2013.
Dan can be seen playing regularly throughout southern California with Frank Stallone, Melissa Morgan, The Tim Gill All-Stars, The Mike Barone Big Band, The No Vacancy Orchestra, Pretzel Logic, and The Elliot Deutsch Big Band. Dan is the co-creator of The Sunset Horns: a versatilehorn section based in Los Angeles (sunsethorns.com) and his endorsements include RS Berkeley and Andalucia Musical Instruments.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I try to gauge their interest in different genres of music. We do a lot of listening and try to find the path that best fits that student. Technique and basics of the instrument can be learned through many lenses. So when working with a new student, I try to find the lens that keeps music fun and interesting.
