About

I teach intermediate to advanced Guitar and Bass to teenagers and adults who want to play their favorite songs as well as write and perform their own. My performance and composing experience has given me the tools to teach technique, performance and writing skills. I’m passionate about giving students tools to write their own songs.

So far my first 3 months with Ryland have been even better than I expected. I am playing better and better every week and I am also learning how to read music. He shows up on time and is professional. Lastly he makes it fun!

Was very pleased with the outcome of taking Ableton lessons with Ryland. Very informative and was quick to answer any questions. Would definitely recommend for any skill level.

I have gone from not knowing anything to playing in a band. Rylands knowledge and patience in teaching is absolutely great. The practice sessions are always fun and encouraging.

Only my two older kids were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take lessons with Ryland. My older daughter had him for her rock band class. It was amazing how well he worked with this group of kids. They were inspired and motivated to learn, grow and perform. He helped transform them from individually talented musicians to a cohesive, professional sounding band in a fun, supportive environment.

    Frequently asked questions

I talk to them about their musical background and ask them what they would like to learn and what their goals are. Then I start with some fundamentals like scales and/or chords and build into working on a song that at their skill level that fits their tastes and interests.

I studied Jazz Bass, Composition and Piano at The Juilliard School and have a Bachelor's Degree in Music.

I have over 10 years experience teaching Guitar, Piano, Drums, Bass and Ukulele in person and 3 years online.

    60 minutes - $80

I started teaching Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums in 2012 in the Metro Detroit area.

I've worked with ages 4 to 70 with students who play various styles of music including classical, rock, folk, blues and jazz.

I recently saw The Smashing Pumpkins at the Hollywood Bowl and it was amazing.

I would say look for someone with a strong musical background and many years experience teaching. Also, strive to communicate what your goals and interests are to to get the most out of your lesson experience.

What songs, artists or styles of music do I want to learn how to play?

What would I like to be able to do after taking lessons for a year (play a concert, play a certain song, etc.)?

Am I willing to practice consistently (even if it's only 5-10 minutes a day)?
