About
David started teaching Piano and AP Music Theory in 2014 when he served as the Director of Music Technology for the Villa Park High School Instrumental Music Department under the Direction of Major Charles Jay, USMC. Since then, David has expanded his involvement in music education to include both individual and group music theory and piano lessons.
When he is not teaching, he also enjoys a career as a traveling concert organist performing Theatre Organ concerts throughout the country.
When it comes to music, David would describe himself as a Jazz Pianist and Theatre Organist, although he is equally well versed and equipped in the classical pedagogy and loves giving his students the best of both worlds to develop well-rounded musicians. His love for music theory also comes through, and he enjoys teaching the concepts of music theory to every student in a way that is fun and easy to understand.
When he is not performing or teaching, David enjoys spending time with his dog Miles, cooking, and gardening. He also has a passion for music technology and recording, and can often be found experimenting with microphones within a fraction of an inch to find the best mic placement...and yes - he does feel bad for the neighbors!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
All of my lessons are highly customized to the needs of the individual student. I NEVER use the same methods for everyone; this is unprofessional and typically never works. When I first meet the student, we will spend some time determining what their learning style is, what they like in music, what they want to achieve with lessons, and ultimately what their end-goal with music is. The answers to all of these questions help me develop a process that is made just for the student, just as a tailored suit is made just for the customer who purchased it.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I served happily as the Director of Music Technology with a focus on Keyboard Studies and Advanced Music Theory at Villa Park High School from 2013-2018. After that, I served as the Lead Piano Teacher at Soli Studios Music, INC where I had the pleasure to teach both individual and group lessons.

I offer three (3) different lengths of time for lessons. Beginning young children should start out at the 30-minute lesson time

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide variety of students from many demographics and age groups. My youngest student was 4 years old, while my oldest was 83.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I just purchased a fully restored 1912 Mason and Hamlin BB, considered to be one of the finest pianos in the world. Mason and Hamlin was/is a direct competitor of Steinway, and often people who play Steinways LOVE this piano. Having it in the studio has made a huge impact on my teaching.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always make sure that you like the teacher. NEVER take lessons from someone you do not LIKE. If you take lessons from someone who you don't like, you will most likely not learn anything.
