About

I live in the city of San Pedro (Port of Los Angeles) and have been a teacher for 45 years. I enjoy working with students of all ages. I'm passionate about spreading the joy of music making, the brillance of classical composers, and the how music can shape our lives.

I have a BA in Music (Flute) and an MA in Religious Studies. I worked for 33 years as a church musician and was awarded recognition for my children's choir by the City of Los Angeles.

In person instruction is always desired but I am happy to teach online and have had great sucess doing so.

Cindy D.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons online with Mrs. Barnes for over two years. She was an older beginner, starting lessons in 8th grade. We began during the pandemic and I was amazed at the quality lesson that could be achieved in a virtual setting. She worked with us to make sure the sound quality and camera views allowed her to see and hear our daughters playing. She has a wonderful way with students to make the lessons both fun and challenging to keep the progress moving forward. She provides a very detailed lesson plan to guide the student practice time between lessons. I highly recommend DMB Music Lessons.

Frequently asked questions

For children I like to hear all about what they like to do, where they go to school, how much they love music, if they sing at home and assess their sense of humor.

For adults I like to learn about why they want to study at this time of their life, and what are their passions and interests.

I have a BA in Music and have taught music lessons, rehearsed choirs, orchestras and music ensembles all of my professional life.

30 minutes = $35

45 minutes = $50

60 minutes = $65

I taught at a music store as a teenager. It was something that came very naturally to me.

Students of all ages! I've taught children as young as 6 and adults in their 80's. I'm told I'm a very patient listener.

My final children's choir concert was an absolute joy! The students performed beautifully and the parents were thrilled at their progress and love for the music we performed.

I've had similar experiences at my flute and piano studio recitals.

I have a broad background of different musical experiences which I believe enhances my ability to serve my students.

I would like students to be open to all types of music and to become aware of how its study can improve all aspects of their education.

I want to impress upon students that playing music should be an absolute joy and that steady work and progess is the goal.

Is music necessary to my happiness?

Will studying an instrument help me in other areas of my life?

Am I willing to committ to practicing my instrument in between my scheduled lessons?

Am I willing to have fun as I pursue the serious study of music?
