About
Anyone can just grab a bow and arrow and shoot. But everything is better when people learn how and why it all works while they develop the correct skills necessary to have fun, to compete, or simply to grow. I offer private archery lessons at my indoor range at 1300 Kingsdale Avenue in Redondo Beach, by appointment only. I operate under the guidelines of USA Archery and the National Field Archery Association. That's why South Bay Archery Lessons is "The Best Place to Become an Archer!"
I was teaching for many, many years, and it became less and less fun. I was also teaching archery all day saturday and Sunday--my teaching "break"--but it was obviously more fun. I chose to retire to do what makes me happy: sharing my passion for archery! People who learn archery with me invariably leave happier than when they came in.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with equipment selection, a safety session, an introduction to mental management and positive thinking, step-by-step work with a 10-part shooting process, and then have fun and success in shooting.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a USA Archery certified Level 3-NTS Coach and Judge, in the top 10% of coaches in the state. My non-archery background is teaching with the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1976-2017. I was a National Board Certified Teacher, United Teachers Los Angeles Platinum Apple recipient for Excellence in Education, and a City of Carson recipient of Teacher of the Year. I was also an honored Scout Leader for 17 years, and I'm well-known in the local archery community. I'm the proud father of three great kids.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For a private, hour and a quarter lesson with all equipment included (by appointment only), 1 archer is $60, 2 archers is $50 each, 3 archers $45 each, 4-6 archers $40 each, 7-11 archers $35 each, 12-19 archers $30 each, 20 or more $25 each. Large parties include more time and additional coaches. We also have a party room available at no additional charge.
How did you get started teaching?
When my kids were young (14 years ago), we got involved at a local club as a family activity. I became president of the 60+ year old club for about 7 years and realized the importance of proper training. I started taking more and more lessons and studied coaching. I created a facility where I could retire from public education and teach archery full-time. My background teaching public school (over 30 years) and as a Scout Leader helped.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with disabled people missing one to three limbs, people who are blind, wheelchair-bound, ages 8-86 (so far), people with autism, ADHD, or extreme stress, people who speak little or no English, as well as basically everyone else. I work with people who want to go to the Olympics as well as with hunters. I work with archers who shoot recurve, compound, or longbow. I work with people who come for a private party (birthday, bachelors, any event), corporate team building, and film and TV actors.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently (February, 2018) did an episode for a French reality TV show called Les Anges (The Angels) where I coached a kick-boxer to help improve his ability to focus. Luckily, my French from high school was quite helpful as his English was minimal. We all had a great, succcessful session!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a certified Level-3 or 4 coach who LIKES to teach new archers; many only want to improve existing, accomplished archers and can lack patience and understanding. Check Yelp and Google reviews. Ask questions!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals with this sport? What would you like to accomplish. If you like it, how much time weekly/monthly are you happy to commit? Do you want this skill for here locallly, or for another state or country?
