Dr. Chang Lu is both an active musician and dedicated instructor in Los Angeles. Born into a family of musicians, she was introduced to piano at the young age of four, then flute at nine. She has given performances on both instruments throughout her music career. Having attended elementary, middle and high schools that were attached to a music conservatory, she has been a professionally trained musician since a young age. She taught private flute lessons, piano lessons, aural skills and music theory classes throughout high school while in China. Dr. Lu just graduated with a Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree from USC Thornton School of Music in flute performance with minors in Music Theory, Orchestral Conducting and Early Music.
Since moving to the US, Dr. Lu have been teaching in diverse communities with students from different cultures and backgrounds. With all of these experiences, she have developed strong teaching skills by encouraging creativity, boosting musicianship and improving performing techniques. Currently she is a flute instructor at USC and several other private music schools in the Los Angeles area. Her students' achievements include winning first prize in solo and concerto competitions, acceptance in school and community orchestras, and passing advanced-level of music theory tests.
Dr. Lu have a broad experiences performing as a soloist and as an orchestra principal flutist. She has also recorded for many motion pictures, TV series and music videos. In addition to performing, she composed several pieces for solo flute during her school years at USC, using both tonal and post-tonal techniques. She also made my own transcriptions and arrangement of pieces, for use in solo and chamber recitals. Dr. Lu also conducted a small chamber orchestra recital at USC in 2016.
