So Cal Speech And Debate
About
Speakers League - Public Speaking for children 10-18 years old. Junior Speakers League for ages 7-9. Several locations in L.A. and Orange Counties - homeschool, after school, online! Students learn leadership, confidence, critical thinking, and more, while they work through a curriculum that has been proven effective for over ten years! Clubs meet twice monthly during the school year for 90 minutes. Students are assigned roles that help them run the meetings themselves. Crucial life skills learned in a safe, friendly environment! Speakers are given evaluations by a peer and by the Chairperson (that's me!). They also receive a link to a video of their speech to help them complete a self-evaluation.
I homeschooled my daughter, who is now off in the working world. This was our favorite class! The environment is like a business meeting. Rather than having a teacher standing up front trying to train the kids, they all participate by serving in various roles throughout the meeting. The kids create the atmosphere and self-regulate their behavior - it's just magical!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Students may begin at any time during the year. They begin participating in meetings immediately, learning as they go. Member Handbook and training videos help them get up to speed quickly. They work through the levels at their own pace.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Doreen Philbin holds two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Southern California. She is a fellow homeschooler who left a career in marketing to see her then 3-year-old daughter, Jennifer, all the way through high school. Jennifer was a charter member of Speakers League; she reached Level III in the group before moving on to other pursuits. In addition to working as a writer, Doreen is a life-learner who tries to be curious, not judgmental! Doreen’s mission is to help students both to enjoy and to excel at public speaking. Speakers League was by far her favorite homeschool class, and she has continued to participate over the years, volunteering help with club trainings and videos. She offers Speakers League classes for homeschool, after-school, online and in-person.
