Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know my students a little before we start working together. I’m mainly seeking to understand your desired medium for lessons, your experience level - both in general and specific to the medium on which we will focus, and your end-goal. Are you seeking lessons for a hobby, for college entry, professional purposes, etc?
Once we establish a base line as far as what you know and what your goals are, we can really dive in and achieve great things together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to being a professional Fine Artist, I have my Bachelors Degree in Education from Penn State.
I recently built the hands-on art program at an Orange County Private High School in Newport Beach at which I also currently teach art.
Since 2017, I have been hosting group paint sessions and private lessons out of my home art studio.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard fee is $35 to $50 per hr.
I recommend a minimum of 2-hour sessions but am happy to accommodate your schedule.
These rates apply to sessions scheduled Monday through Friday.
Weekend Rates are case by case. Typically $75/hr when available.
These rates do include all materials.
How did you get started teaching?
What started as a hobby and a mission to decorate my own home with meaningful artwork, quickly snowballed into a full-blown career. With my love of art experimentation and my educational background plus my passion for sharing this joy with others, it was a true no-brainer for me to begin teaching art.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with High School students and Adults of all ages.
I do not accept clients younger than 14 years of age at this time.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love attending as much as hosting wine and paint nights. It is fun to socialize as well as learn new techniques! As a teacher I find it especially fun to be the student for a change and get a feeling for different styles of teaching.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I can only encourage you to find someone with whom you “CLICK”. Without a really strong comfort level you may start to feel pressured by your art experience. My philosophy on art, especially in my lessons, is that it should be therapeutic as much as it is educational.
My goal for every session is for my student to come away knowing that while there may be more to learn their art goals are attainable!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. What is your experience level?
Be open and honest with yourself and me so that we don’t waste your session time with redundancies or with you feeling lost!
Scale for Reference:
Beginner - little to no experience, maybe some basic art classes (HS) or occasional hobby
Intermediate - active hobby of yours, you may have taken some college courses or at least have self educated a bit, you’ve art dabbled
Experienced/Pro - you know what you’re doing in your field and are either seeking assistance in building your portfolio (college entry, etc) or you are looking to expand your current knowledge base
2. What do you want to achieve from lessons with me?
Are you wanting to decorate your own home, taking up a new hobby, working toward school entry, or perhaps looking for a therapeutic past time? Think about it, so we can give you the best experience; the experience that you deserve!
