Janice's Piano Lessons
About
I have an extensive teaching background, but recently, I wanted to focus on my love - teaching piano. After graduating from UC Berkeley, I had many successful years of teaching and tutoring. I taught for 5 years formally as a teacher or special ed teacher. I am credentialed as an Education Specialist, and I have over 7 years of tutoring experience. I teach all four core subjects in Middle School (Math, Science, English and History).
I love when kids and adults enjoy what they do, and when they eagerly look forward to their experience when they come for academic tutoring or piano lessons. I also encourage the discipline of goal-setting and regular home practice, and I provide homework assignments as needed. Success builds upon success, so I am very positive and motivating. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically informally assess the new student. Then I order the piano books and schedule a recurring lesson time slot. This occurs after I provide a free trial lesson to help the student decide and see why I'd be the best fit, with no strings attached.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taken private piano lessons for more than 10 years consecutively, with a few excellent teachers. I have an Education Specialist credential and plenty of teaching experience.
How did you get started teaching?
I have taught multiple subjects for most of my career but I found my passion as a piano teacher when I started with a couple of students in 2013, teaching them piano on the side.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from ages 2-83. I have helped students with disabilities, learning or physical (even someone with missing fingers).
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Yesterday, I had my 6-year old student play an assigned piece to a level above my expectations. He received an upgrade from a small keyboard to an 88-key Yamaha digital piano.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice is to go with a teacher who is not only skilled, but also makes learning fun, motivating and organized. You want to make the most out of your piano lessons, so choose someone you feel most comfortable with.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think about what their specific piano goals are. To perform? To write music? For fun? Also, how much time are you willing to dedicate for practice?
