I believe everybody is an artist.
My feeling is somewhere in childhood we all come to a place where that gets questioned. Perhaps we judge ourselves for the artwork not looking real enough. Maybe we look in the mirror and see what our society or environment tells us we should be. Maybe it's a voice within the same household or school or neighborhood? Maybe it's coming from within. I want to honor that challenging space many of us have faced, consciously or not.
Is there a creative way, an artistic path that you've veered from? One you've dreamed of returning to? I am here to support you in remembering that road, or even blazing a new one.
Jonathan Levine makes art because he has to. Creativity emanates from him, making those around him realize the value in art making. Born in Los Angeles in 1967 Jonathan has been making art since he could write. Beginning with sketchbooks kept as a child, a foundation was laid at an early age for expressing himself creatively. Since moving to San Francisco in the early 1990’s to study photography and painting at the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA, 1996), he has experimented with other mediums including pen and ink, poetry, watercolor, sculpture and digital art. Jonathan enjoys transforming found and natural materials into magic wands. This process was a large piece of Jonathan's creative evolution which occurred while studying Transformative Art at John F. Kennedy University (MA, 2011), where his art making path and his spiritual path converged. Jonathan has exhibited in San Francisco and Los Angeles, with his digital art and fine art selling in the U.S. and in Europe.
Comments from workshop participants:
"I liked spending time, in nature, doing art with my boys. I like that they were intrigued and involved by the process. I think your calm, direct, open manner was inviting for everyone of all ages". -SB
"I loved the light and easy spirit in which this workshop was offered. I felt invited to join in, and was given space to do the activity my own way - there was no pressure for things to be a certain way. J offered the invitation then held the space for whatever wanted to happen". -KD
"We loved making things using our imagination and feelings and our room now smells so good with the scents of forest and eucalyptus. So good! I enjoyed being in contact with nature, in an open space, just doing what comes to me vs. what is expected of me, creating something with my hands, having something that I can touch and take home with me, being in a group but still be able to work independently, the eclectic mix of people with a common purpose, the opportunity to share with everyone the thought and meaning of the piece I made and also Jonathan's probing questions about it!" -AM
"I enjoyed being in nature and being able to be focus on the environment we were in. Also being able to be with other people and sharing a common spiritual experience while still realizing an individual experience. I thank you for your passion, your imagination and your willingness to step forth bravely into the mystery. I trust that the magic made today shall service you into the future, bringing further magic, insight and rewards. (Rewards in this instance refers to the Magic Wands, Power Objects, Mystery Vessels, and other manifestations that Nature gifted unto you to Magically Artify!)" -RB
I am excited to share my creative and technical knowledge with you. Such as what others have called a "gift of sight", namely, an innate ability to frame and compose-- oftentimes before even looking through the camera lens!
I love experimentation. I love to work with the medium in such a way that it ends up being a collaboration, a dance. For as long as I can remember, I have seen art making as a laboratory of the mind. I began my adventure in photography with film and spending hours in the darkroom. In high school, became familiar with experimental films and processes like solarization, double exposure, infrared, lithographic film, and more.
Over the years my photography has evolved to include street photography and using it as a tool to tie my other creative mediums into digital collage.
