About

I have a deep love for the game of baseball and am genuinely grateful for the positive impact it has had on my life. Coaching and developing young players is my way of giving back to a sport that has given me so much.

I meet each player where they are—mentally and physically—to establish a clear baseline and design instruction that aligns with their age, skill level, and individual needs. I believe in building strong core fundamentals first, creating a foundation that supports long-term physical and mental development, as well as personalized growth.

I played competitive college baseball during the ’88, ’89, ’90, and ’91 seasons and appeared in two consecutive College World Series. I continued playing competitively well into my 40s.

Today, I have the privilege of serving as the Head Freshman Baseball Coach at Woodcreek High School in Roseville. Prior to that, I spent 20 years coaching young athletes, leading multiple teams to success—including two back-to-back District 54 TOC titles, a District 54 championship, a Section title, and a third-place finish in the Juniors All Stars State Championships.

I am passionate about helping young athletes advance to the next level of their baseball careers and take pride in tailoring instruction to each player to help them reach their highest potential.

Coach Mike Shirk has a lot of baseball skill to teach AND knows how to teach kids. He can tell when a student doesn’t understand and will take the time to explain it other ways. When giving students homework, he helps them understand what and why they are practicing. He’s really helped my RHP son understand his mechanics as well recognize how to self correct. He’s very positive, supportive and above all else cares 100% about his students!

Frequently asked questions

First lesson is a discovery session to learn more about the player/student development goals and objectives for the lessons, then I will conduct a fundamentals and mechanics evaluation with the use of video to be used as a live reference to help  build a specific development plan, that aligns with player/student goals and objectives for fundamentals and mechanics development. The player/student development plan will be specific,  measurable,  attainable, realistic and timely to ensure successful results.

I have over 40 years of experience as a player and coach. As a player, I was a pitcher, middle infielder and catcher in high and college.  I've appeared in 2 back to back college world series in '90 and '91.
