Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I prefer to start with email and/or telephone discussion to assess your needs and establish a training plan that works for you. Then, you are free to schedule classes with the confidence that you are getting the best training for your goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
While I am certified by both NRA and USCCA, I have been training shooters for over 20yrs. I started training new shooters when I was in the Army, WAYYYY back in 1987. I also have a lot of experience training in a variety of other topics, and have won awards for communication and training.
I pride myself on patience and clarity when training anybody on a subject that is new to them
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Course prices are clearly stated on my website, but there is always wiggle room for those with special needs or special requests.
One on one, or private group training prices will be determined on a case by case bases. To clarify a bit, the more people in your group, the less you will each pay.
Your initial assessment will always be free!
How did you get started teaching?
I have always enjoyed coaching and mentoring others. I started as a student tutor in grade school. Then, I helped coach running in High School, followed by training new remedial shooters in the Army and Army National Guard. Finally, I have been training friends and family for decades, until several people suggested I should do it professional.
So, I did an apprenticeship with one of the top USCCA instructors in the Sacramento area, and eventually started my own business.
What types of students have you worked with?
Kids, adults, soldiers and veterans. I've worked with people of all ages, and from all walks of life.
I have helped people overcome their fear of firearms. I have helped shooters and veterans with disabilities to overcome physical issues.
I pride myself on patiently communicating at a level appropriate to my audience, no matter who that is.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a student who was terrified of guns. She was in her late fifties and had physical problems that made walking and standing for long periods difficult.
After several trips to a local range, we gradually worked her up to shooting a gun.
Eventually, she overcame her base fear. Now she owns a gun and goes the to range at least every other month. She is working on becoming a quicker and more accurate.
I love when she texts me the picture of a target she's proud of!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Think "coach" or "mentor". Interview each by phone or in person. If your personalities don't fit, try another. If they do match, you're more likely to learn a lot and establish a relationship. Anybody can teach you to point a gun at a target. You should select someone you can trust to help you grow as a shooter; someone who will mentor safe technique that builds as you develop comfort and competence.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you eventually want to do with firearms? Do you want to hunt? Have you thought about competition? Do you just want to feel safer? Can you accomplish your goal without a gun? If so, can your instructor still help you reach that goal?
I offer home defense options that do not require guns…
