About

Hello, my name is Edward Mallory. I've been painting professionally for over 20 years and teaching about half that long. I teach oil painting for all levels out of my home studio in Roseville. Painting is a marvelous pastime for young or old. Once you learn it will bring you years of joy and just maybe some notoriety for your work as an artist. I've taught many to paint over my years. Painting is a skill you can develop. Sure, some are blessed with more natural abilities but with practice anyone can learn to paint well.

Practice is essential you can learn to paint by someone telling you about it or reading it in a book- you have to do it. So before signing up for lessons make sure you have time to devote to practice. The good news is it's fun!

I teach private lessons these days only. My process is in studio instruction supported by painting demo video home study.

I teach mornings Monday-Friday. Students attend weekly lessons from 1 to 2 hours and my fee is $50 per hour (I supply the materials for the lessons with my fee).

Please visit my website @ www.edwardmalloryfineart.com if you would like to more of my art.

Also, my studio is located on the second floor of my home so if you have any mobility issues with stairs, please be aware.

Thank you and happy painting!

I met Edward at an art show in Loomis, CA. I immediately signed up take a lesson. Edward is a great teacher. I have learned so much from him. I have taken five classes from him and hope to take more. He as such a great ability to help the student see how to mix the paints and lay them down on the canvas. Each class I have walked away feeling great about the experience.

Having taken many classes from Edward, I find him to be a patient and talented teacher, good in private or group lessons. As an impressionist painter, he takes a “painterly approach” by blocking in, putting in darks and cast shadows, then transition lights and then lightest lights. He taught me value. He said , “If the values aren’t right, the painting won’t work’. Additionally he goes over saturation, temperature, color mixing, warm/cool colors, and when/how to gray down color and many other things. He taught about keeping edges soft until the last minute, and how to achieve atmosphere. Edward does a good mix of demonstration/teaching, and working with you to help your painting achieve it’s goals. I learned about brushes, tools, and techniques as well. Great all around instruction!!

Edward knew his subject, was well organized, taught the full time, and answered questions as they arose. I particularly liked his sharing his palette paint choices, both limited and expanded. He was personable and knowledgeable and I enjoyed the class.

    Frequently asked questions

Well first is to understand their goals and expectations. If they are just beginning that can be hard to define sometimes but I'll just cover how the process works and what they can expect. More experienced painters I ask them to bring examples of recent work and after a bit of critique I now have a baseline and we can talk about the students interests and needs.

I'm a big believer in color skills. In opaque medium if you understand color or color properties and can create accurate mixtures, this painting thing gets a whole lot easier. So, whether you're just getting started or more experienced, color skills and how they work to create these illusions on canvas is probably where we start.
