About

I'm Robert Burcar, a Los Angeles based professional painter and art instructor. I work with children and adults of all ages and abilities. My weekly lessons are tailored to the students interests and artistic goals. After a brief complimentary consultation, my tutoring approach upon working with a new student is training them from the ground up with potential weekly lessons to build a solid understanding of the fundamentals of basic drawing and painting skills. Alternatively, if I determine the student is well in advanced beyond the fundamentals during the consultation, I assist them with whatever it is their wanting more instruction on. I give them instruction on their stuck points as they work on a drawing or painting project of their choice.

My emphasis on drawing and painting focuses on shapes, proportion accuracy, line quality, perspective, color and design. Once the student completes the fundamental drawing exercises, I will then assign them an art project tailored towards their interests to apply what they've learned in fundamentals. This is a weekly project they can work on at their own pace until completion. I'm experienced in teaching several mediums including charcoal, graphite, colored pencil, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink and more.

My applicable credentials include nine years of professional drawing and painting teaching experience for various art organizations and individual students. I have extensive professional experience in art studio management as well as teaching both group classes and private lessons. I'm a highly skilled and classically trained artist with a bachelor of Arts degree from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I consider my teaching style entertaining and fun. I'm very patient and have a clear understanding that all students have their own unique learning style and I do my utmost to adapt to that particular style.

    Frequently asked questions

    I begin with a free consultation over the phone with the potential student.  I like to find out what their goals are creatively as well as their background if any in art.  From there, I build an individual course tailored towards their interests and needs.  Most of the time, for beginners, I train them from the ground up and begin with the fundamentals of basic drawing skills.  I teach the student the important topics about seeing shapes, proportions, line quality, tone, color and then move towards an individual drawing/painting project that the student works on over the course of several weeks under my guidance.

    I have a BFA in drawing and painting from the Academy of Art University and 20 years of professional drawing and painting experience.  I also have been a professional art instructor for eight years, teaching group classes as well as private lessons and painting events.

    Private Lesson Rates;

Cancellation Policy: My art lessons are my main source of income, therefore I ask if you need to cancel a lesson that you kindly give me 48 hours notice if possible. I know things happen and I'm willing to negotiate depending on reason. However for last minute cancellations, a $75.00 cancellation fee applies. I appreciate your understanding.

    In 2015 I was a member of a community art studio called Open Ground Studios in Seaside, CA.  The director was looking for instructors to teach art classes and asked me if I'd be interested in teaching a portrait painting class after seeing my work.  I had very little teaching experience at the time but I told her I'd give it my best shot.  From there, I went on to teach one successful six week course after another ranging from Portrait Painting, Landscape Painting and Charcoal Drawing. I then began accepting individual students for private drawing and painting lessons.

    Senior Citizens, Adults, Young Adults, Teenagers, Children, Special Needs.

    I'm fond of the moment my students complete a drawing or painting project they've been working hard on under my guidance over the course of several weeks.  When they are proud of what they accomplish, seeing their smile as they hold up their drawing or painting is priceless.

    In order to draw or paint with confidence, it's just like learning a sport or playing an instrument.  You must be willing to do the work with an open and positive attitude.  You must be willing to practice often and consistantly in order to get better.  There are no short cuts and talent is only a small part of the picture, the rest is work.  Also, its not about perfection, its about progress.  If you want to learn how to paint well, you must be willing to learn to draw well because that's the foundation.

    To think about what the students goals are and what they would like to accomplish through art lessons as well as how much time and effort are they willing to give.
