Professor Roy Harris is a phenomenal teacher! He provides both a great mix of listening, speaking and practical learning techniques and a safe, supportive learning environment. As a student, you feel pushed to learn and try out new moves, feel supported in doing so, and gain valuable feedback that helps you to improve.
I have learned so much from Professor Roy. He paces his lessons just right so you feel challenged but not overwhelmed. He is patient and eager to help.
He puts a lot of thought into how he presents his material. His lessons are engaging, useful, and he is always encouraging his students to try; he’s great at building confidence.
Seminars/Classes with Professor Roy are so worthwhile! He has an amazing way of breaking things down so that they are understandable, and always keeps it light and fun. I would highly recommend Professor Roy to anyone interested in learning jiu jitsu.
Professor Roy! You are amazing at what you do! Your passion and dedication is beyond words! It has been an honor to have you on my jiu jitsu journey.

Working with Roy is a pleasure. He is courteous, kind, professional, and respectful. Roy is a legend in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and martial arts communities and is one of the first 12 Americans to achieve their black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is a rare and remarkable accomplishment. As a teacher he is clear, patient, and extremely well prepared. Whether you are a World class practitioner or a hobbyist, I can recommend Roy Harris as a private tutor and instructor in the highest possible way.

My ‘in home’ lessons with Mr Harris were very ‘clear and concise’ as Mr Harris is the best at making any techniques whether ‘advanced or basic’ easy to learn.

Mike Ritz
Mr. Harris is the most professional instructor you will find in the martial arts. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to your lesson. I have had the pleasure of learning from him for the last 20 + years. Even today, he is able to share new insights.

On-site private training with Professor Harris is the ultimate in convenience when it comes to world class combatives instructional training. Prof. Harris is punctual & communicates any schedule changes well in advance. His rates (in my mind) are far too low for the level of service he provides and the level of skill he works so diligently to develop in his students. For those who are fortunate enough to work directly with him, you know that you’re receiving a real education from a true subject matter expert.

Mr. Harris teaches in an incrimental linear fashion that has direct practical application. By focusing on one thing at a time and building upon each of those things you end up the a few usable repeatable skills rather than being bombarded by a multitude of teqniques. You conclude with honed teqniques that you can implement into your game right away and with confidence.

He is encouraging and good at addressing both your strong and weak sides. His grasp of the game is kind of scary. Training with Roy often felt like getting an unfair advantage come no into regular class the next day, but also gave me clear tactics to work on. He also introduces a level of theory that I have not gotten from anyone els

Roy has been called the “Answer Man” for a reason; he’s looked at technique and philosophy of technique in ways most have never considered. He’s the consummate professional and a true Professor in every sense.

My sessions with Mr. Harris are personalized, focused, and provide me with both the skills I desired to learn and a plan to train them on my own. My sessions with Mr. Harris are essential to my becoming a better practitioner and instructor.

I have been a private Kali student of Mr. Harris' for about 4 years. We are so fortunate to be able to learn from this master. He truly is one of the greatest martial arts teachers alive. He cares, he breaks things down easily, he teaches from the ground up, he teaches what is important. He works with the foundation which is the only true lasting way to learn, to grow, to change. He has no interest in flashy techniques, he is interested in results and helping you to become a master of yourself. If you want old school style teaching, run to learn from this man while you can. ~ Lee Selman, owner at Paleo Treats

Professor Harris has an amazing wealth of knowledge in multiple different martial arts, including BJJ, JKD, Kali, and many more. His ability to distill complex ideas/techniques down to its simple roots is amazing. He makes learning martial arts simple so that anyone at any skill level can grow and learn quickly. He also truely cares about his students and their development in the arts. I have personally flown from Cleveland, OH to San Diego, CA multiple times to take private lessons from Professor Harris. If you are in the area it is well worth your time and money to train with Professor Harris. You won’t find anyone better!

A private lesson from Mr. Harris is eye opening, enlightening, and encouraging. After studying the same art for 13 years I am amazed at knowledge of every detail of every concept in jiu jitsu. His instruction far surpasses the simple sharing of techiniques but are conceptual strategies that can be applied through multiple disciplines in life.

Roy has the ability to break down every technique and teach/demonstrate/explain it in an easy to learn and understand method. I have been involved in martial arts for over 34 years and Roy is by far the best teacher/instructor/trainer/mentor I have ever had. I highly recommend anyone to seek out instruction with Roy. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

I am deeply indebted to Mr. Roy Harris. The amount of detail and thoroughness that he relays in his teaching is superior to anyone. He helped me climb my way to the highest level of international competition in Mixed Martial Arts. To be honest the thing I love about Prof. Harris is that he has done all of the various forms of sparring. You cannot short cut putting these methods in real life application. He has a deep knowledge of multiple martial arts.

Mr Harris has the ability to ‘break a technique down’ and simplify even advanced techniques.
He is the best martial arts instructor I have ever trained with and I have been involved in martial arts for about thirty years.
Since I started training with Mr Harris no other instructor has the ‘gift’ he has at ‘imparting’ knowledge that he has.
Thank you for being my teacher.

Private lessons with Mr. Harris are always outstanding. Mr. Harris doesn't give blanket answers to any of my questions yet he gives multiple answers and different variations depending on what your opponent is doing. It has always amazed me he can tap into my own knowledge and sometimes have me answer my own questions. The amount of quality information you get for the price is a great bargain. Highly reccommend!!!

I liked my private lesson with Roy Harris because he made me understand how to start my first year in jiu jitsu. I’ve survived and have thrived because of that lesson to date. It’s been 3 + years and I’m 49 now :) In addition, his seminar lessons and online lessons are my foundation as well.

Mr. Harris is hands down the best instructor I have ever learned from. I teach martial arts for a living, and I exclusively take private lessons from him. The depth of knowledge and teaching style are unmatched. Simple answers to very complex problems make him the gold standard in today's crowded martial arts world.

Mr. Harris is a courteous and skillful teacher with exceptional communication skills, which make him an outstanding educator. It also helps that he is a Jiu Jitsu Master with nearly three decades experience as a practitioner. As a struggling Jiu Jitsu student I felt deeply encouraged after my lesson with Mr. Harris. I cannot recommend Roy highly enough as a private martial arts instructor.

Professor Harris teaches to each “learner’s” ability & goals. He effectively teaches using fundamental techniques and builds on them in sequence, adding just enough of the ‘fancy stuff’ to keep his audience engaged & wanting more.

What an honor it was to train with and learn from Professor Roy Harris. My Husband and I took a seminar with Professor Harris and we were so impressed by his style of teaching, that we were excited to train with him again. We took a private lesson with him while vacationing in the San Diego area. It was a family lesson: our 2 younger kids, 8 & 10, our 16yo, my Husband and Myself. We were impressed from the moment our lesson began. The first thing Professor Harris did was ask us what we wanted to work on. Being that we were all just weeks away from our very first Jiu-Jitsu competition, we found this extremely helpful. He started by talking about strategy. One might think it would have been difficult to develop a strategy that would work for all five of us, being that we are so unmatched by age, skill, size, & athleticism, but Professor Harris did it with ease. His teaching style was all about mastering techniques by repetition and finding the shortest number of movements from start to finish. No wasted energy. We worked through takedowns, guard passing, and one thing that I have found that Professor Harris is known for, keeping really heavy pressure! He sent us off with a bit of homework and conditioning. I walked away from our lesson with a new confidence in my Jiu-Jitsu game. After having trained with Professor Harris, his strategy tucked under our belts, we all walked out onto the mats for our first competition with a better sense of what we were capable of, and we owe that to him. We would absolutely recommend training with Professor Harris. We look forward to training with him again soon.

Roy is an excellent instructor. His lessons are always extremely informative. Even if he's showing a technique I've seen many times before there is always some new and important detail that improves my overall understanding and execution of the technique.

Very technical and ability to do multiple reps of the procedure being taught . Enjoy learning repeatable basic skills that actually work. Gives me a very solid foundation to build upon.

He tailored the lesson to my exact needs, which as a brown belt in jiu jitsu, are pretty specific. He can identify whether a missing concept or a missing detail is what you need, and deliver the information in a way that is specific to your learning style.

In-Home Lessons with Master Roy is an awesome experience. I got to train with one of the best in BJJ in my house! Nothing can beat that. I was so honored of by his presence. Master Roy thought me basics in BJJ and took his time and patience in doing so. Also, what I like about the In-Home Lessons is that he dedicated all the time to me only. I think this is an advantage to learn on a one-on-one or small group basis. I did enjoy it very much. Thank Master Roy.

Roy is punctual, professional, and giving. His instruction is clear and concise. He does not hold back detail from his students. Roy can expertly diagnose deficiencies in your technique/training in a very short period of time and prescribe training methods (beyond technique) for improvement. I consider myself to be blessed to have him as my instructor, my mentor, and my friend.

Being in the martial arts and training for a considerable amount of time with many different instructors, I can say Sifu Roy is about the best as they come. A detailed and very patient instructor who can work with students of varying experience and skill levels. Mr. Harris utilizes a very comprehensive and articulatable curriculum in several arts that ALL may understand and retain as they continue their training. His understanding, interpretation and presentation of the ‘martial’ way can be realistic in one sense/execution and fun in nature in another. Mr. Harris has a wide array of information, yet simple when dissecting the details of his curriculum, encompassing the ‘eye’ as his coaching is second to none. This is a method I mimic and pattern after as a part of my own teaching style. Mr. Harris’ in-home instructions/lessons is highly recommended and if you have an opportunity, his time, knowledge, and experience is a ‘pillar’ of a martial arts journey.
