Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
What's your favorite music? What do you want to accomplish? How can I help you get there? Those are the key quesitons. I focus lessons around the music a student really loves, building learning through that music.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Doctorate, Music Composition (Yale School of Music)
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
80/hr
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching my friends in High School, I was the sort of music nerd. I'd teach them how to play their favorite music by listening, breaking it down, communicating it, building it up.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages, from 4 years old to retirees.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We visited St. Mary's Church in NYC, where I used yto play the organ for services. We were surprised they were hosting a sofar event there - an impromptu concert. I was there with my wife and daughter; it was a beautiful way to revisit a place from eariler in my life, and think about how things both change and stay the same, and how music remains so important in everyone's lives.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher you connect with, and who will work from music you care about, as opposed to a rigid pedagogical system.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Just two - what's your favorite music ( a few songs) and what would you like to be able to do, musically, in say, six to eight months.
