As a teacher, I can help new students to learn painting/drawing techniques and develop their eye-hand coordination. Once they have more experience handling the tools, I will encourage them to develop more on critical thinking. Since an artist is an one person endeavor, critical thinking can come in handy at times.

I do my homework and look for references ahead of time, and I give my students 100 percent of attention when in session. I also do demonstration on painting techniques in session as well as give feedback to students' work.

I enjoy an art-making creative process from nothing to something, from an idea to a tangible work, from doubt to certainty, from mistakes to right choices, and from critiques to new creations. This cycle of making from begin to end gives me a chance to find my strength, weakness, happiness and satisfaction. It is not an easy path, but it gives me an avenue to be me and to connect directly to an audience. I will not have any other way.

    Hwei-Li is an amazing teacher and a wonderful person. She is incredibly supportive of my artistic endeavors, no matter what they may be. She was more than able (and patient) to help me from the very basics and still has countless things to teach me within an intermediate and advanced level.     I have taken classes from Hwei-Li for many years. She is an excellent teacher. Some things that I really like about Hwei-Lis teaching style are:
    - She crafts lesson plans based on what the student wants to learn and what skills the student already has.
    - She is really patient and understanding with her students.
    - She clearly explains concepts and most importantly *demonstrates* techniques that will greatly improve anyones drawing/painting skills, beginner or advanced.
    - She will support you and make sure that you are creating things that cater to YOUR interests.
    - Excellent with color, composition, and form
    - Lastly, and I cannot understate the value of this point, working with her gave me an intuition for how to improve my own work. This has helped me tremendously because it has meant that I can see my own improvement between paintings.

    Frequently asked questions

    Understanding a student's previous painting/drawing experience and interests is a key to begin a personized plan. For a begining student, I will focus more on introduing various techniques by demonstration and viewing of masters' work. For a more advanced new student, in addition to building on top of skills learned prior, more foucs will be on content building.

    I completed an MFA in Painting/Drawing at the San Francisco Art Institute.

    I started up as an art teacher at the College of Marin and the San Francisco Art Institute adult education program. In the past two years, I have been guest teaching, subsitute teaching and assist teaching in the Marin Academy.

    I have worked with students from high school, college level and adult education.

    The de Young Open Exhibition 2020 selected my painting "Loud and Clear", currently on display at the de Young Museum until January 3, 2021.
