Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will do a quick assessment of the student's current skills, which could be through a couple questions for a student to solve, having the student walk me through the process so I can determine how the student is thinking through the problems.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a tutor since 2004, and have a teaching credential in the state of California covering all school mathematics levels.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Usually I charge $25.00 per hour, usually starting with 2 hours per session. I find 1 hour is rushed, but more than 2 hours starts to fatigue the students.
How did you get started teaching?
I started as a tutor in 2004, free lance, and later through a tutoring company. While I was working on my bachelors degree in accounting, I was tutoring my classmates and other students studying math at the time. I completed my bachelors degree and moved immediately into my masters degree in education, secondary math. Since I completed my masters degree, I have been a substitute teacher, a middle school math teacher, and a high school math teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide range of students. I have worked with students that needed additional support, students with disabilities, as well as students accelerating their learning to complete more studies in less time. I have also worked with students new to the United States with language barriers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At the high school I was just at, students approached me to start a Disney club. We did several different activities in our club meetings, from movies, to trivia, to coloring, to karaoke! We even went to a movie theater at the end of the school year to watch a movie that released that day!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't expect instantaneous results. Sometimes they do occur, but that isn't the norm. Studying math requires patience, as the struggle in learning the process is important for your brain to do the calculations quicker the next time. Tutors that "guarantee" improved test scores in a short amount of time are usually not the best.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students need to narrow down exactly where in the problem they are struggling. Just telling a tutor "I can't do it" limits our ability to help. Tell us WHERE you get stuck, and what you have tried to do, and we will get you to the results you want much quicker.
