About

Fitness has brought great joy and purpose to my life working as a basketball trainer/ personal trainer. I always thought I had a lot to give back to the community & I wanted to start that by giving back my knowledge and experiences to the youth. Seeing the kids/adults develop basketball skills and reach their overall fitness goals is truly what I do it for. With a business based on educating others how to not only lose excess body weight, build lean muscle, live a healthy lifestyle, but also learn how to recover their bodies to prevent injury. Here at " The Grove" we work hard but also have a philosophy of care and respect for ourselves and others. I have been teaching people athletics in the Bay Area for two years now with my required CPT cert as a personal trainer. I'm a hooper, originally from the south side of San Jose. I have played JV, Varsity, some college, & even a few adult leagues for basketball. The south side is where our facility is located right off of Alma Avenue near the SJSU stadium. We have a full weight room with galvinized weights, bumper plates, olympic bars, dumbbells, kettlebells, bands, squat racks, a cable machine, a row machine, a punching bag & speed bag. For recovery we have foam rollers, compression boots, a venom to loosen up back tightness, and hyperice ball to get out all those unwanted nots in unpleasant areas. We also have a half court hoop unit as well that includes a shooting machine to get reps in, a main basketball hoop and form shooting hoop off to the side, tons of basketballs for all ages, heavy balls, pads of all sorts to enforce the teachings of contact & seating area for the parents/friends to tag along on the workout experience. We have already developed kids from being bench players to asserting themselves as starters on the floor by transforming our athletes into two way players (Offensive & defensive) We offer 1 on 1 personal work as well as small group work of up to 3 people at once. Your workouts will be personalized to meet your long term goals as an athlete or just someone who is looking to stay healthy and fit. Come join The Grove fam and grow with us.

Stay Rooted,

-Coach Colby

    Frequently asked questions

Working with a new student we know that not one person is alike. Each training session is personalized to the individual and their current skill level. We will talk about health history, rules of our facility, COVID guidelines questionnaire, as well as current & long term goals to help you reach. On the first session we do a free orientation to let you come see our facility and talk to you to see if The Grove is a good fit. We commit our time and give a lot of energy to the individual so we want to make sure it is worth everyone's time and effort. We will go over finances and try our best to give a price that fits someone's budget at a reasonable cost to our efforts. Once  someone is interested then we proceed with signing some legal documents to cover all of our basis including but not limited to COVID guidelines, etc. After everything is cleared through that process we can proceed with a set schedule & time slots the individual would be available to attend their workouts

I have my CPT as a personal trainer & 15+ years of basketball experience as an athlete. I can relate closely with individual because I was once in their shoes. That being said my goal is for the youth and adults in general to get ahead by showing them the positive outcome that sports and fitness can instill on a persons mental and physical health.

For pricing you may have to inquire individually. I do sessions by package deals. Depending on the package you would like to follow through with will determine a discounted rate. That being said I do packages of 10, 5, & 3 session package deals. At 10 sessions I can give a discounted rate of $50 per hour whereas 5 session packages go up to $60 per hour & 3 session packages go up to $70 per hour. Now like I said we can talk about pricing more in person if those prices don't seem to work with the budget an individual had in mind. In the past we have sponsored some clients to fit their financial needs so that way everyone is happy.

I've always had a passion for helping and teaching others. It all started in high school when myself and two other friends started our own 3 v 3 basketball tournament at Oak Grove High school. We learned that a lot of kids get into some bad things when they are given a lunch break. So instead of letting them lounge around we decided to share our love of the game of basketball with some friendly competition. After high school we pursued other jobs in search of our own purposes in life. Though those jobs were great and paid pretty well  though we realized that basketball & being fit was something we excelled at and couldn't let go of. Instead of holding on the these secrets to becoming a successful athlete we decided to share our skills to develop the next generation of hoopers to be better than even ourselves.

We have worked with all types of students ranging from very young (5 years of age) to even some D1  college athletes and semi pro athletes. At all skill levels their are strengths and weaknesses that can all be honed into creating an overall basketball player. Even if you are not an athlete we can take you in for personal training to get you fit for any occasion like summer, before wedding goals etc.

The recent events I'm fond of are letting the kids go back to playing sports. With this lock down fitness is more important than ever for everyone's mental and physical well being. Even though we specialize in basketball some of our athletes have taken our training to other sports as well. Sports provide a health outlet for kids and adults alike. Thank you to everyone doing their part to get our country out of this slump we were in. Now is the time to take action and be mindful of our health.

I would tell them to make sure they find a teacher who truly cares. Clients that we build with basically become family like brothers or sisters to us. In order to push someone to their fitness limits there has to be sincerity and correct guidance to get you to your goals.

Any questions that pops into ones head should be asked try to be resolved with an answer that the teacher can give to connect to the individual to understand the excercise or task at hand. The individual should think through how their body feels before a workout so that during the flexibility aspect we can cater to what the body needs to stretch out before that same muscle is put to work during our session. Same thing applies to drill. If something isn't connecting for the individual to learn the drill then ask the coach/ trainer to go more in depth & slow things down in order to understand the whole concept of any given drill.
