Jane Monteagle
About
My teaching philosophy is borrowed from Sir Ken Robinson. I aim to know not how intelligent my student is, but rather how is my student intelligent.
As a fully credentialed teacher, as well as a teaching artist, I am passionate about creative writing. English, and the arts, including the sewing arts. I have worked many years not only with those who are well off, but also with marginalized and disenfranchised populations including orphaned children, incarcerated adults, and those relegated as mentally ill.
This has provided me a breadth of experience that lets me provide individuals the tools they need to become engaged with their own learning, whatever the subject or project.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Upon meeting my students, I get to know them through a conversation about their learning needs and educational goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a credentialed teacher and also a teaching artist. My passion is the arts and education through the arts. This is what and how I like to teach.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$35 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
My post-graduate teaching certificate professor asked of I would be willing to create and execute a creative writing program for the Los Angeles Men's jail. I accepted the challenge.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught the children of well off parents, orphaned children, incarcerated adults, people relegated by society as mentally ill, and students from low economic area.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I remember with great fondness, pride and satisfaction, the 10 week creative writing program I created and conducted for 12 inmates in a Los Angeles downtown jail. We wrote and produced a children's play, which I then officially copyrighted in all thirteen names.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for compatibility in aims. Does the teacher you are looking to hire have your best interests at heart? If so, are you, as a student, willing to be opened minded about learning and are you willing to stay with the learning, no matter the hurdles, knowing your teacher is there to support and guide you?
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Sometime working together from the very beginning is the best way to start. A good conversation with the right teacher will draw out the needs of a student. Preplanning isn't always necessary. Just come to the conversation with an open mind, a willing heart and a desire to learn about yourself through education.
