experience of teacher-a tremendous amount of knowledge

  • Mary W.

Wonderful walk and photo lessons along the pier towards Venice. Learned some nice tricks. I do another lesson this time in Santa Monicas.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

The first thing is to interview the student either email, phone or in person and find out what he/she goal is.

Secondly to go on an actual shoot preferably to the beach or pier if enough energy is there for a complete trip from Santa Monica to Venice.

If really enthusiactic and in shape prehaps a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains from a two mile trip to over twenty five miles.

what is student goals and his/her experience

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been a professional photograher for over thirty years shooting major ad campaigns and major motion picture campaigns globally - from virtually all the continents. Major movies include: Stella Got A Groove Back, What's Love Got to Do With It?  "42, the film about Jackie Robinson and Get On Up a film about James Brown produced by Mick Jagger shot in Ole Miss.

I worked for Newsweek Interational based in London for seven years later relocating to NYC (Commercial Photography) and then Los Angeles for TIME Magazine.

I am a member of IATSE Local 600 - the motion picture Cinematographers Guild as well as NPPA, National Press Photographers Association.

I am a photojournalist, portrait photographer and a commercial photographer. I have covered major international conflicts and various Olympics.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Initially I charge $100 per hour with a three hour minimum. I charge less for teaching photo shop and light room in post production (about 50 per hour).

I do have a minimum of three hours for a booking on the initial visit.

How did you get started teaching?

I have leactured ad taught at various schools around the world. Usually to professional photographers or those fine tuning their craft.

I have taught at various schools in the past.

What types of students have you worked with?

All types from friends who wanted to began a career in professional photography to hobbyist ad even cell phone cameras. I use the iphone 8 Plus.

I have mentored at least a few dozen to become professional.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I do enjoy virtually all types of photography. From hiking,  the beach, sailing and sports.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Talk to them and find out if they fit in your plans and most important listen and ask questions, many questions LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.

LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT  do you want to learn lighting, do you want natural light photographer. Do ask about speedlights, color of light source, light modifers and anything else.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

How far the want to go in photography?

Or just take better pictures.

Look at my recent contribution to instagram. I have been putting an image a day on for the past few months.
