Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
One of the best things I can do when meeting a new student is pause to consider the gap between us. There may exist an age gap, or a culture gap or even a language gap.
To bring us to more common ground one of the best exercises I give my students in the first class is THE TOP TEN LIST assignment.
10 people you are inspired by (living)
10 places you want to go
10 things you must do before you die
10 dream jobs or clients in photography
If we are doing this quietly, thoughtfully by ourselves we may illuminate some of the most imporant things about why we are attracted to this in the first place. Perhaps I have been places, met people and done things you are interested in and can share that experience.
Or more likely, you are going to take me to school and show me people, (arists, musicicans, writers) that I have never known! This begins a conversation between teacher and student that is based upon sharing, love of learning and the confidence that each has something to bring to the lessons.
We go from there.
