Sonia's Flute Studio
About
My biggest goal when teaching is to bring music back into peoples lives since many a time the arts are being taken out of public schools. Music is an important aspect of people's lives that people cherish one way or the other.
The most rewarding part of teaching music would be the fact that I am able to share my gift of music to the next generation so that they can have a different way of being creative.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I first meet with the student that has been playing for a while, the first thing I do is to see there current level. I ask students who have been playing a while to play a few songs so I can get a feel for where they are and to see how they play. I then make note what books are needed for that student and point out whatever minor habits that need to be worked on.
For new students who never played flute before, the first thing I do is to offer the parents to go with them, free of charge, to help them pick out a flute at a music store. I do this because this will give me a chance to test out the various beginner flute and to check them over so that the parents are getting what they pay for. I then spend the first lesson going over how to take care of the flute and how to make a strong sound on the flute. Once they have mastered making a sound on their headjoint, I have them put the rest of their flute together and begin teaching them how finger notes and how it all comes together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my Bachelors of Arts in Music and my Masters in Music from San Francisco State University. During my time at San Francisco State, I studied under the second chair of San Francisco Symphony's of the flutes, Linda Lukas. Prior to starting college, I studied the flute with Leslie Chin. I am also principle chair for the orchestras that did the following soundtracks: Star Wars 7-9, Game of Thrones (beginning in season 5,) BFG, Inside Out, and recently contracted for the next Indiana Jones movie coming out in 2018.
