The Write Stuff
About
I'm a former journalist (celebrity profiles) who helps writers at any level boost their writing skills or write and publish a book. I can also lay out the pros and cons of self-publishing vs. finding a literary agent, writing a book proposal, and going for a traditional publisher. My background: I've interviewed film stars, political figures, and best-selling authors for Redbook, McCall's, Parade, AARP The Magazine, Woman's World and many other publications, and I'm the author of Space Patrol: Missions of Daring in the Name of Early Television, a saga of live TV. I created the "Get Published Now" seminar for The Learning Annex, and I've taught "Introduction to Getting Published," "The Art of Interviewing for Writers," and "Take Your Writing to the Next Level" at UC Davis and UC Riverside. If you're wondering, "How can I upgrade my writing?" "Should I self-publish or go mainstream?" "How do I find an agent and write a book proposal?" or "How do I start (or finish) my book?" visit www.thebookmentor.com or call 310-281-3004 to schedule a free consultation. Author Susan Shumsky says: "Thank you, Jean-Noel. If it weren't for you, I would not have gotten an agent and had my first book published by Simon & Schuster." Look forward to talking soon!
I like coaching! I enjoy teaching the things I once had to learn myself, because I can sense where my students or clients get stuck, and I know how to make it easier for them. That's very satisfying, emotionally.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually work by phone and email and record the session for you. Of course we can meet in person, or by Zoom or Skype, but if we don't live close, I encourage clients to try phone sessions. They work really well, in conjunction with email. We can send documents back and forth and look at them together while I record the session. That way, you can listen to our session as often as you like and implement everything we discussed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I spent 20 years working as a journalist for national magazines, including Woman's World, Parade, Redbook, and many other publications. I've also taught writing at UC Riverside, UC Davis and The Learning Annex.
