About

I offer online Zoom lessons that are engaging and fun, and In-person lessons at the Huntington Beach School of Music.

I am a professional musician, I hold a masters degree in music, and teach beginning to advanced instrument technique, theory and improvisation.

I enjoy one-on-one teaching because it allows for a more individual and customized approach to learning. Classrooms are great, but individual teaching is the best.

On this site I am charged for contacting you, so if we are geographically distant or if the information you provided does not make you a suitable candidate, I will likely not respond.

Also, any students I have taught through this site contacted me directly and did not leave feedback here. Most students stay with me for years and excellent reviews can be found at the HB School of Music, where your first lesson is free.

Music is fun to me. Let me show you how to make it fun for you too.

    Frequently asked questions

It begins with an assessment of the student's level and a conversation about their goals. After that we navigate a course of study that will introduce essential musical building blocks and soundly accomplish those goals. I teach both European classical and American jazz styles, but also draw heavily on ethnic music from around the world including Celtic, Indian, Eastern European klezmer, and Brazilian music, including the folk music of America which includes traditional jazz (dixieland), big band, patriotic and rock.

I hold a master's degree in Music and a bachelor's degree in Communications. In high school I was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for Outstanding Musicianship, twice. After high school I performed on cruise ships for three years with different entertainers every night. I returned to school for my bachelor's degree and was awarded the Most Outstanding Jazz Musician Award. After graduation I toured the country and the world performing with a variety of bands. Soon after that I entered the Southern California Saxophone Contest for 94.7 K-TWV (The Wave) and won first place. I taught music at the Orange County School of the Arts for nine years and at Irvine Valley College for two years. I was the Concertmaster of the Laguna Concert band and directed their advanced big band. I have worked as a bandleader for Southern California booking agencies for 25 years performing at corporate events.

One-hour weekly lessons are $80. 1-hour non-weekly lessons are $120. I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.

I started out as a boy fascinated with music, then grew into a man who played music professionally. I've always enjoyed learning and helping others learn, and over the years I developed a talent for sharing complicated musical concepts in fun new ways. Teaching online is even better because it offers some great tools for learning.

Many of my students are at the high school and college level, but I especially enjoy teaching older students. My students have won scholarships, earned orchestral chairs, gained entry into top schools, received music awards, and gone on to play professionally. Some just play for fun and that's okay too. Whatever your goals, I can help you get there.

Come to the Huntington Beach School of Music and meet me. The first lesson is 30-minutes and it's free.
